Buchanan family fonds

The Buchanan family fonds consists mostly of correspondence, invitations, photographs, books and other types of documents. The records pertain to the years that George and Lilla Buchanan were residents of Sudbury. Most of the correspondence is between Lilla Buchanan and her family and friends. There are also letters of congratulations for the appointment of George Buchanan as King's Counsel. A program, photographs and a newspaper clipping document the Royal Visit to Sudbury on June 5, 1939. The photographs of the fonds depict the Buchanan family and their friends. There are also 11 copies of photographs depicting Sudbury in the early 1900s, people of the community, and early railway construction.

The records of this fonds document the activities and the organization of LEAF Sudbury. It consists of the agreement with LEAF National, annual reports, documentation on the Mary Lue Hinds Award, and correspondence. The documents also provide information about fund-raising events, especially the Person’s Day Breakfast: promotional documentation, programs, photographs and speeches of guest speakers.

The records in this fonds attest to the educational mission of LEAF Sudbury and their interventions. There are records on the Book Project, reports, minutes and other related documentation on LEAF Sudbury’s profile in the community. The fonds also consists of general documentation, such as publications, bulletins and legal reports, which provide information about the activities of LEAF across Canada and at its local branches.

This fonds is arranged into four series: I: Constitutive and Administrative records; II: Fund Raising; III: Education projects; and IV: Documentation.

Elmer Sopha fonds

The Elmer Sopha fonds contains what is believed to be Sopha’s only remaining records. The fonds consists primarily of notes and transcripts of speeches delivered at various gatherings between 1965 and 1980, and also transcripts of daily radio commentaries aired at a local Sudbury station. The records also consist of transcripts of articles that Sopha wrote for journals and for weekly columns in the Northern Life newspaper, as well as correspondence consisting mainly of letters written by Sopha to members of the Provincial and Federal Legislatures, and their responding letters. These documents provide insight into the private and public life of Elmer Sopha, and they emphasize his opinions on a variety of subjects. The documents also attest to the fact that Sopha was a respected lawyer and a popular guest speaker at numerous gatherings throughout Ontario. His speeches offer a sense of how he positioned himself within the socio-political landscape of the time, both as a politician, and as an individual. The records of this fonds are a testimony to the dedication of Elmer Sopha to the cultural, economic and judicial concerns of Northern Ontario.
