Fonds consists of document entitled “UNPROFOR Engineer Mine Guide.” It is an early manual prepared by 1 Combat Engineer Regiment (1 CER) for identifying and clearing landmines in Yugoslavia. The manual was prepared in 1992 when 1 CER served with the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR). It includes black and white diagrams and illustrations for numerous types of mine anatomy, as well as several de-mining and explosive laying techniques.

Fonds consists of a copy of the final report of No. 7 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) from 1945 regarding the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP) in Windsor, ON. Fonds includes the history of the creation of No. 7 EFTS as well as pictures of the school’s Board of Directors and Officers. Also includes the General Manager, Albert A.J. Pelzer’s final account of the state of the finances of No. 7 EFTS upon its closure on 15 November 1944. Pictures of the topography, accommodations, the fleet, and the recreation and entertainment available at the school are also included.

Fonds consists of a report entitled “Study of the History of National Organizations Responsible for Emergency Industrial Production”. It was prepared in 1987 by William Johnston for the Emergency Plans Division, Department of Regional Industrial Expansion. Included in the contents is a summary of the creation of the Department of Munitions and Supply (DMS) and its roles and responsibilities concerning industrial mobilization during the Second World War. The report also includes ten chapters entitled: Prewar Defence Industrial Planning; Defence Purchasing Board and War Supply; The Department of Munitions and Supply; The Production Branches (of DMS); Contracts, Purchasing and Finance Branches; Service Branches; Controls and Expected Results; Wartime Prices and Trade Board; Postwar Planning; and Canada’s Place in the Allied Supply Effort. The report concludes with a brief summary of the Department of Munitions and Supply’s impact on Canada’s war production.

Fonds consists of a special victory number of The Crow’s Nest dated June 1945, published to commemorate the end of the Second World War. On the cover is a colour portrait of an Able Seaman painted by war artist Lt Gordon Stranks. Inside the newspaper are articles covering many topics related to the navy including the surrender of German submarines, the continued fighting in the Pacific, and new technologies. Also included are articles highlighting exemplary members of the RCN (Royal Canadian Navy) and WRNS (Women’s Royal Naval Service), and advertisements for companies that served the RCN by providing shipyards, lumber, steel, and pavement.

Collection consists of an account of Commander J.H. (Harris) MacLean’s naval career including his voyage through the Northwest Passage, and a copy of the eulogy delivered at Commander MacLean’s funeral. Both were written by Ian Greenwood from interviews he conducted with Commander MacLean beginning in November 2006. The collection also includes various black and white photographs of HMCS Labrador and her crew as they erected beacons during their voyage through the Northwest Passage. A black and white photograph of the crew of HMCS Margaree and four colour photos, three of HMCS Margaree, and one of ships moored at Pearl Harbour are also part of the collection. Also includes various group photos from a meeting of the Explorers Club of New York in 1956, a photo of 2nd Escort Squadron Hockey team taken in Tokyo Japan in February 1962, several photos of groups of men from HMCS Discovery and HMCS Kings. Includes black and white photographs of graduating classes from Fleet School, HMCS Naden, Esquimalt. Miscellaneous black and white photos of various ships, people, icebergs, sailors, and planes are also part of the collection.

The video highlights VSEL’s new use of technologies including computers and design software as well as the building of a newer facility at the forefront of all technological and logistical development. The video also shows images of various submarines built by VSEL in action.

Fonds consists of one small photo album with handwritten notes and fifteen small black and white photos taken during the Second World War. Includes two small newspaper clippings. These photos were collected by Iris Birtwistle and other female volunteers at the Catholic Soldiers Club in Aldershot, United Kingdom. Also includes five mounted photographs, some duplicates, of members of 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade Anti-Tank Coy., Canadian Active Service Force (C.A.S.F.) and Headquarters 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade.

Fonds consists of one oversize ledger entitled “Record of Service OMFC Medical Units”. The document contains information on various medical units during the First World War including unit names, dates and commanding officers. The entries also include a remarks section that makes note of various matters of interest such as notable individuals, transfer of patients, or events such as bombings or the awarding of medals. Certain entries in the ledger are followed by a skeleton history of the unit. There are 89 entries in total. Additionally, there is a two-part photocopied map of the south of England enclosed with No. 2 Advanced Depot Medical Stores. The map includes many of the units mentioned in the ledger but does not appear to be contemporaneous with it.

Fonds consists of two files of material collected by a Collateral Board of Inquiry during its investigation of the circumstances surrounding the 9 December 1989 accident of helicopter CH135128 near El Gorah, Egypt. File 1 includes an accident narrative, crash area maps, crash sequence and wreckage diagrams, witness statements, annexes, statements of the Board members, causes and findings, recommendations and remarks by various commanders. File 1 also includes photograhs of the accident scene and documentation, including pages of aircrew log books, forms and aircraft registers. File 2 includes witness statements, terms of reference, excerpts from log books, statement by the Board, findings, recommendations, Commander’s remarks and decisions, and other documents.

Director Operations fonds

Fonds consists of situation reports from September 1967 to March 1974. They begin being titled, “Director General Operations Daily Situation Report” before changing to “Deputy Chief Operations and Reserved Daily Situation Report” in February 1968. They were then named “Canadian Armed Forces Daily Situation Report” from October 1972 onwards. They were collected in monthly reports, though a synopsis of activity was provided for each day. All three branches (Army, Air Force, and Navy) provide an account of what happened each day. Information provided includes: both domestic and international operations, search and rescue endeavours, peace operations, updates on the political and military situation of various countries where Canada was involved in (i.e. Cyprus), ship positions, special flights, northern patrol and other daily occurrences within the military.

Fonds consists of photographs depicting the women’s service dress uniform introduced in 1979. Along with the modified jacket and skirt, other items illustrated include the winter hat, the gabardine raincoat, the overcoat, the V-neck sweater and the leather purse. Accompanying the photographs is a letter signed by N.A. Buckingham, Director of Ceremonial for the Chief of the Defence Staff, which discusses the method by which the new uniform was to be introduced. Within this letter, a brief description of each item is provided.

Gilbert Boulanger fonds

Fonds consists of Air Gunner Gilbert Boulanger’s flying logbook for 1942 to 1944, which includes several photographs and newspaper clippings from that period. The logbook also contains colour photographs of RCAF aircraft and of Boulanger at ceremonial events, including his flight inside a CF-18 fighter jet in 2010. A copy of the signatures and approbations for this flight, as well as the invitation to the 2009 Bagotville Commander’s Ball, is included within the logbook, along with several autographs from RCAF personnel. Also consists of two compact disks, one of which contains scanned pages of the flying logbook. The other holds Boulanger’s personnel file from the Second World War.

Fonds consists of seventeen black and white photographs most likely taken by Ronald Gerald MacDonald during his service in the Royal Canadian Navy(RCN) around 1960. The photographs of HMCS Cornwallis are mainly of the buildings on the base. The buildings and locations in the photographs include: the exercise building, the pools on the base, the curling rink, the parade square with men marching, the train station and train crossing, the churches, and a view of the base from a nearby mountain. One photograph in the collection was taken on HMCS Bonaventure and it depicted the 3000 catapult launch.

Fonds consists of a manual written and published by John W. Schmidt, United States Navy, called “Ship Handling – Destroyers.” The date of publication is unknown. The manual consists of advice on how to steer and handle a destroyer in a variety of conditions. It includes illustrations of destroyers’ parts and movements, drawn by hand. Schmidt’s personal stories are also included in the book.

Donald G. Macleod fonds

Fonds consists of documentation of the Canadian Army Contingent, 6147th Tactical Control Group, United States Air Force gathered by Lieutenant-Colonel (Ret’d) Donald G. MacLeod. The fonds describes the activities of the Tactical Control Group during the Korean War, making particular mention of the members of the Canadian Army Contingent. Includes a nominal roll of the Canadian Army Contingent, as well as listings of casualties and honours and awards. The largest part of the fonds is a personal narrative written by MacLeod about his experiences as an air observer with the 6147th Tactical Control Group from May to August 1951. MacLeod also makes note of the awards he received because of his action in Korea. Includes photocopies of two photographs of himself taken with United States Air Force pilots.

Dennis J. Furlong fonds

Fonds consists of two reports related to herbicide spraying at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Gagetown, New Brunswick, noting the 1966 – 1967 testing of Agent Orange, Agent Purple and Agent White. The document is a fact finding report written by Dr. Dennis Furlong on the spray programs from 1952 to 2004 at CFB Gagetown. The second document, a 2011 update report from Golder Associates LTD., was intended to review the use of herbicides at each Canadian Forces site and determine whether Agent Orange or Agent Purple were applied at any other sites. No direct evidence was found to indicate that those herbicides were used anywhere other than CFB Gagetown.
