Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence received by Harold Murchison Tovell, Ruth Massey Tovell and Vincent Tovell, most notably from their friends the French artist Jacques Villon and his wife Gaby from 1928 to 1962. Other correspondence concerns the lending and donation of family artworks. Also included are catalogues for exhibitions of the works of Jacques Villon and his brother Raymond Duchamp-Villon as well as inventories and photographs of Tovell family artworks and furnishings. Collection consists of a series of recorded interviews gathered or commissioned by Ann Davis in the course of her research for her biographical work Somewhere Waiting: The Life and Art of Christiane Pflug. Several interviews were conducted by Ann Davis’ assistant, Elizabeth Schwaiger, who is a professional translator. The subjects of the interviews are people with whom Christiane had contact with throughout her life. For the most part, the interviews focus on the interviewees’ relationship to Christiane and/or her family. The collection also contains older recordings with the voice of Christiane herself. The collection consists of research files created by Angela Grigor in preparation for her book Arthur Lismer: visionary art educator (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2002). Materials in Series 1,2 and 3 are primarily photocopies from original periodicals, pamphlets and exhibition catalogues found in institutions in Canada, the United States and England. The collection contains Angela Grigor’s correspondence with these institutions and with Arthur Lismer’s daughter, Marjorie Lismer Bridges, and her daughter, Janet Cauffiel. A number of interviews are documented, including recordings of two interviews with Arthur Lismer for the CBC, and the many interviews Angela Grigor conducted with former students, fellow teachers and other associates of the artist. George Agnew Reid fonds

Fonds consists of two scrapbooks containing material created and collected throughout George Reid’s life and were compiled by him in the late 1930’s. Volume I, 500 pages, contains photographs and notes on the Reid family; drawings, sketches, etc., as well as press clippings and exhibition catalogues relating to works of art by Reid and his first wife, Mary Hiester Reid. The 131 pages of Volume II are devoted to designs for buildings and their interior fittings, including summer homes and a church at Onteora, New York, houses in Wychwood Park (Toronto) including the Reid house, and Ontario College of Art designs. Materials include drawings in pencil, pastel and ink, watercolour sketches, small oil paintings, blueprints, photographs, postcards, letters, texts of speeches, letters, awards and material clipped from magazines and newspapers.

Helen Sanderson Sewell fonds

L.A.C. Panton fonds

Fonds consists of correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, lecture notes, newsletters, cards and party invitations, exhibition catalogues, reproductions of art works, passport, certificates, and photographs relating to L.A.C. Panton’s personal and professional life. The photographs range from portraits of his family in England to scenes that provided the basis of paintings, particularly the Nova Scotia coastline. Correspondence relates to his involvement in art societies and his community in North Toronto but does not include his family life. Letters were received from several members of the Group of Seven, Florence Wyle, Arthur Heming, Fred Brigden, G.A. Reid and many others. Clipping files relate both to his professional life and his interest in economics and current events. The fonds arrived at the archives in no discernible order; order has been imposed by the archivist to correspond as much as possible to a file listing found in the fonds. Henry Sandham collection

Collection consists of a four-volume set of proof engravings by Henry Sandham for his illustrations in Century Magazine and other publications. The engravings were assembled by the artist, who inscribed in ink on the title page of volume 1: “The only complete set of proofs of the engravings from Hy Sandham’s drawings for Century Magazine from 1881 to 1886. These proofs were printed from the blocks before they were electro-typed and cannot now be reproduced except by being engraved again. The cost of each print in this book was fifty cents. Hy. S.”

The Collection consists of printed forms that have been completed and signed by Canadian artists between 1912 and 1979 and a group of 24 responses to questions posed by AGO staff in 1984. The final group is concerned more with the nature of the artist’s work rather than factual and biographical information. The earliest forms were one page in length; basic information regarding birth date, education, exhibitions, awards, publications and a signature was requested. Forms sent out in the 1970’s are two pages; the 1980’s files consist of lengthy responses in essay format to 7 or 8 questions. Two of the artists from the final group submitted audio tapes that have been transcribed. An alphabetical listing of artists can be found in the administration file.
