Part of Hellmuth College/Mount St. Joseph series

This subseries consists of a summary of the Eucharistic Congress which was chosen by Bishop Fallon to be held at the Mount St. Joseph Chapel in July, 1923. After the celebration of Mass, the Blessed Eucharist was carried throughout the grounds followed by the children and Sisters. The entire service was accompanied with music from 100 children from the separate schools as well as the Sisters. The subseries also includes a summary of the visit of Cardinal Villeneuve of Quebec in 1934. The Sisters were honoured he would be visiting them and therefore decorated the halls with bunting, flags, and flowers. Throughout his speech, the Cardinal continuously addressed the school children and specifically thanked the Sisters.

This series consists of newsletters produced by the Sisters of St. Joseph in the Hamilton diocese. These newsletters cover various topics and events, such as healthcare and pilgrimages, discussions about daily life including feast days and projects, messages from Sisters, as well as news about the surrounding geographical locale. A list of deceased Sisters and family members, information about ministries, memorial biographical sketches, and Chapter information are also topics included in the newsletters. These newsletters are important sources for gaining a better understanding of the Sisters’ daily lives and learning more about their charitable works and efforts. Sisters were very actively engaged in charitable work, with several projects occurring, such as hospital work, orphan care, and missions aiding Canadian Indigenous communities, as well as helping the poor in developing countries. Locations of Sisters’ missions and ministries include, but are not limited to, Fort St. James, Cape Croker, Kenilworth, Guelph, Jamaica, Kitchener, Hamilton, Guatemala, and Fort St. John.

The Hilites newsletter covered a wide range of topics about the Sisters’ daily lives on a monthly basis. Pilgrimages, healthcare, and ministry information is largely discussed in each issue. Chapter is discussed during the years that Chapter was held. Sister memorial biographies and lists of deceased Sisters are present in each issue. Lists and descriptions of important Community events, such as feast days, are also provided. Newspaper articles from outside sources are included to inform the Sisters of news from the surrounding geographic locale.

The 1960 newsletter was a “trial run” of a community effort to provide news to the Sisters throughout the diocese. The newsletter successfully wove together important topics and issues for the Sisters, and was subsequently printed every two months. Healthcare, missions, ministries and important Motherhouse events, such as jubilees, are discussed in each issue. A list of new postulants is provided periodically. Community building projects, such as the Hamilton and Kitchener hospital expansions are documented.

This sub-series contains transcripts of oral history interviews and digital copies on computer disks. The oral histories are first-hand accounts of the Sisters’ personal, and religious lives with prompts and questions from the interviewer. The oral history interviews were conducted by Sister Marjorie FitzPatrick for the Federation. The oral history interviews of Sisters Noella Armstrong, Mary Doyle, Augustine Long, and Margaret Ferris took place in London, Ontario in November, 1992. Sister Cathleen Flynn’s interview took place at Morrow Park in Toronto, Ontario in March, 1993.
