Dr. F. W. Luney fonds

The Dr. F. W. Luney fonds consists of 14 series (and 2 subseries) of records chronicling his scholarly beginnings as a medical student at the University of Western Ontario, his appointment as Senior Pathologist at Victoria Hospital, and the extent of his professional career as Clinical Laboratory Chief at St. Joseph’s Hospital until his retirement in 1961. During his career, Dr. Luney would enlist in the Canadian Army Medical Services Division during WWI, establish a Clinical Pathology Laboratory at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1928, conduct extensive research in blood transfusion techniques, direct the opening of the Blood Bank Department and St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1945, establish private consulting services for smaller hospitals in southern Ontario, and create the Dr. F. W. Luney Fund to raise funds for the Medical Library at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Records of note include: well-maintained, original photographs of Dr. Luney and fellow classmates posing with a cadaver; records created to document body parts and organs donated to Luney’s private “Museum”; personal notebooks outlining his medical training and professional experiences; a selection of diplomas and certificates; records of his $5,000 donation to the Medical Library at St. Joseph’s Hospital; photographs depicting the two-person multiple syringe apparatus he invented; notes from lectures and seminars that he gave on pathology and blood transfusion-related subjects; and a 60th anniversary portrait of Dr. F. W. Luney with his fellow 1914 graduates.

This series contains various publications related to the study of medicine and Dr. F. W. Luney’s time in medical school. Most of the publications are small, pocket-sized reference books providing practice and procedure information for a variety of ailments and medical scenarios. Also included are histories, satirical works, a formulary, a bulletin and a printed edition of the Coroner’s Act, revised in 1940. Dr. Luney’s own University of Western Ontario YMCA Handbook and University of Western Ontario Medical Handbook are also included, the latter containing handwritten notes in the memorandum section. One folder contains clipped images and textual passages from A History of Medicine in Pictures by George A. Bender. There are also publications from the University of Western Ontario, including reports from the Institute of Public Health, and a booklet containing information about studies in the Faculty of Medicine, all of which mention Dr. Luney and the positions he held. Finally, there is a copy of the University of Western Ontario Medical Journal from 1934.

This series also includes his Eucharist letter, information about his workshops, as well as a list of scripture passages for reflection and prayer, created by Wolff. There are also handwritten notes.

Listed are the patient and doctor names, specimen type, and administrative details for each specimen (identifying number, etc.). Each specimen also has a History, Macroscopic description, and Microscopic description. The final pages contain details of submissions from the Canadian Tumor Registry of the National Cancer Institute of Canada. Dr. F. W. Luney’s own gallbladder is included in the catalogue.

This series contains personal reflections and accounts by Sister Margaret Ferris about her travels. There are three travel diaries in this series: one from her trips to Quebec, Canada from 1959 to 1963, one from her travels to Peru and Florida, USA in 1981, and one from her pilgrimage to Le Puy, France in 2003. There is also a typed chronicle of the 2003 pilgrimage entitled Pilgrimage 2003 A Return to Our Roots and a lace bookmark from Le Puy. A large scrapbook from Sister Margaret Ferris’s trip to California, USA from 1984 to 1985 is also present. The scrapbook contains drawings and personal accounts by Sister Margaret, photographs, clippings, and ephemera from the trip. Locations of note within the scrapbook include Detroit, Oakland, San Francisco, Muir Woods National Monument, Berkeley, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Santa Barbara, Palm Springs, Pasadena, Monterey, Reno, Carson City, and Lake Tahoe.
