File consists of a ledger book including meeting minutes from the Port Hope Old Boys and Girls Association, Toronto Branch, 1923-1928. The book includes many historically important Port Hope Names (i.e. Brockenshire, Snell, Baulch, Merrifield, Skitch, Mackie, Byrne, Davidson, Lockington, Craig, Hacker, McLennan, Clarke, Kelly, McMahon, Wright, Martin, Kerr, etc.). Early meetings were held in the home of William Skitch (311 Jarvis Street, Toronto), with E.C. Merrifield serving as Secretary.

Baby Point Plaque

Item is one temporary plaque made of corrugated plastic. The design of the plaque replicates other heritage plaques around the city of Toronto that detail local history. Titled “Baby Point Crescent, Baby Point Road, Baby Point Terrace”, the contents of the sign explains the history of Jacques “James” Baby, who the area is named after. It highlights the Baby family’s ties to slavery, citing they were responsible for enslaving at least 17 Black and Indigneous people. The creator of the sign is unknown, it is one of several signs placed around Toronto to draw attention to the involvment of prominent historical figures in slavery.

Item is a composite image created from two separate photographs detailing the boundaries of the Toronto Purchase between the Crown and the Mississaugas of the Credit. The original sale is dated to 1787, however there were questions raised about the legitimacy of the documents and about the delineation of the land. In 1805 a formal purchase was documented and is referenced in the text of the item. William Claus, the Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs, signed on behalf of the Crown.

The photographs date from the late nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century. The fonds also contains one file of textual records.

This fonds consists of photographs documenting the Stern and Rumianek families, individuals and organizations from the Hamilton and Toronto Jewish communities, as well as Bill Stern and his fellow servicemen during the Second World War.
The fonds has been arranged into the following series: Family photographs; Military photographs; Hamilton Jewish community photographs; Toronto Jewish community photographs; and Camp photographs. The photographs have been described at the item level and have been arranged chronologically. The textual material consists of two files containing records related to Bill Stern's professional and philanthropic career, as well as some family invitations.

Fonds consists of records documenting the personal, professional and communal activities of Phil Givens. The bulk of the material is graphic and most of the photographs relate to his tenure as Mayor of Toronto and to his Jewish communal work. The records also include general correspondence, speeches, campaign material, scrapbooks, cartoons, certificates and awards, biographical writings, audio and visual materials and artifacts. The records have been arranged into nine series representing Givens’ various roles and activities and have been described to the file level and item level when necessary. These series are: 1. This fonds consists of photographs and a small amount of textual records documenting the Mehr, Greisman and Brenner families. The photographs include images of the Mehr family and friends, including individual members of the Greisman and Brenner families, and images of the Lady Ellis Shops in Toronto, Stratford, Ottawa and Windsor. The textual records include Ethel Mehr's confirmation diploma from Holy Blossom Temple as well as a personal letter and a Bishop Strachan domestic science workbook.

Harry Moscoe fonds

Fonds consists of textual and photographic records accumulated by Mr. Harry Moscoe during the 1940 to 1947 period. The majority of these records document Mr. Moscoe's activities as Executive Director of the Canadian Jewish Congress, Eastern Region, War Efforts Committee. A few files also document examples of his personal, financial and legal office activities, while still living in Kirkland Lake and later in Montreal. War Efforts Committee records focus on the CJC's responsibilities for: Servicemen's Centres in Halifax, Montreal, Moncton and St. John, Red Cross blood drives, tracking Jewish officers, Jewish casualties, and regular meetings of the War Efforts Committee. Also here are extensive newspaper clippings documenting Jewish servicemen' activities, casualties, heroics and decorations. Of special note is a 20 x 25 cm b&w photograph within File 18, "Jewish Chaplains". The image features seven uniformed Canadian Jewish chaplains who served during the Second World War. They are: Rabbi Abraham Babb, Rabbi David Monson, Rabbi Oscar Fassman, Rabbi Charles Bender, Rabbi Samuel Cass, Rabbi Jacob Eisen and Rabbi Morrris Casriel Katz.

The Exhibition Place Printed Material collection is an amalgamation from many sources, brought together from stray materials, through culling projects and from subsequent acquisitions. This artificial collection was created to make these materials accessible to researchers and staff, as previously they were scattered and unrecorded.

The Collection is comprised of 4 series based on format: Exhibition Place General Printed Material, Exhibition Place Newsletters, Exhibition Place Posters, and Sports Programmes. Within the General Printed Material and Newsletters series, items are catalogued at the file level and are arranged chronologically. The Posters series is catalogued at the item level and are arranged chronologically. The Sports Programmes series is catalogued at the file level and arranged alphabetically by subject, then chronologically.

The collection consists of photographic negatives and transparencies documenting various trade shows held at Exhibition Place and associated events held at other locations, such as publicity photo shoots and galas. Included are images of the Boat Show, the Canadian National Business Show, the Flower Show, the National Home Show, the International Electric and Electronic Conference and Exposition, the Manufacturers’ Opportunity Show, the Canadian National Pool and Patio Show, and the Sportsmen Show. Photographs depict crowds walking through the shows; performances, ceremonies and competitions that were held at the shows; models and notable personalities; exhibitor booths; show signs displayed on the exterior of the buildings where the shows were held; and various displays of items and events relevant to each show. Also included are portraits of William Mallatratt (Chief General Manager of Exhibition Place from 1976-1981), his house and his retirement party (before he became Chief General Manager), which took place during the Home Show of 1976.

Photographs were arranged by the creator alphabetically by show name. This arrangement was maintained and, where necessary, some refiling was done. The files in this collection consist of negatives and transparencies that were kept together in labelled envelopes containing between 2 and 200 photographs. This file structure has been kept, although the negatives and transparencies have been rehoused in new envelopes. The titles written on the original envelopes have been transcribed and recorded in a note in each file’s description; however, descriptive titles have been supplied as the file titles if the original titles were not complete or correct. Many photographs are labelled with numbers used by the creator to maintain control over the negatives. These creator numbers, when they exist, have been recorded in the alpha-numeric designations note for each file.

This fonds contains records created or collected by the Windsor, Ontario club of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) between 1945 and 1997. Collectively, the records provide insight into club members’ social and political activities, as well as their engagement with provincial and national CFUW bodies, and select member organizations of the International Federation of University Women (IFUW). The records have been arranged into four series: Series I: CFUW – Windsor Club (1945-1997); Series II: CFUW – Ontario (1950-1994); Series III: CFUW – National (1943-1995); Series IV: International Federation of University Women (1918-1994).

Series I is the most extensive, containing 13 subseries for administrative and financial records, meeting minutes and annual reports, conferences, social gatherings, fundraising initiatives, correspondence, publications, news clippings, scrapbooks and photographs, and advocacy work (mainly around the status of women, education, and/or local heritage). Of particular interest are the club’s 1968 submission to the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, and records of its role in challenging gender-based discrimination within the Windsor Board of Education during the 1970s-1980s.

Series II – IV contain some general information about the provincial, national, and international levels of the CFUW/IFUW, but primarily reflect the specific participation of Windsor members in those organizations, often in the form of social gatherings, conferences, or issues related to the status of women. The CFUW’s practice of passing resolutions related to issues of contemporary concern provides useful insights into members’ collective social and political views.
