Fonds consists of drawings, watercolours and designs of A. H. Howard produced in Toronto between 1880 and 1914, especially in the sketchbooks in which Howard drew Ontario landscapes and towns, flowers, trees, human figures, factory interiors and other subjects. Similar drawings and watercolours are contained in two albums and a portfolio. Also included are examples of his decorative and calligraphic work from illuminated presentation addresses, certificates, bookplates and other materials.

The collection consists of research files created by Angela Grigor in preparation for her book Arthur Lismer: visionary art educator (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2002). Materials in Series 1,2 and 3 are primarily photocopies from original periodicals, pamphlets and exhibition catalogues found in institutions in Canada, the United States and England. The collection contains Angela Grigor’s correspondence with these institutions and with Arthur Lismer’s daughter, Marjorie Lismer Bridges, and her daughter, Janet Cauffiel. A number of interviews are documented, including recordings of two interviews with Arthur Lismer for the CBC, and the many interviews Angela Grigor conducted with former students, fellow teachers and other associates of the artist. Collection consists of a series of recorded interviews gathered or commissioned by Ann Davis in the course of her research for her biographical work Somewhere Waiting: The Life and Art of Christiane Pflug. Several interviews were conducted by Ann Davis’ assistant, Elizabeth Schwaiger, who is a professional translator. The subjects of the interviews are people with whom Christiane had contact with throughout her life. For the most part, the interviews focus on the interviewees’ relationship to Christiane and/or her family. The collection also contains older recordings with the voice of Christiane herself. Fonds consists of a notebook commenced by Anna Belle Wing Kindlund in 1895, in which she recorded information on works of art and architectural monuments (chiefly European), with thumbnail-sized albumen prints of many of the items and occasional ink sketches. The notebook has alphabetical index tabs, and its entries are alphabetical according to city. The inscription on the frontispiece reads “Anna Belle Wing – B.S. ‘95”. The fonds is arranged in a single series.

The Collection consists of printed forms that have been completed and signed by Canadian artists between 1912 and 1979 and a group of 24 responses to questions posed by AGO staff in 1984. The final group is concerned more with the nature of the artist’s work rather than factual and biographical information. The earliest forms were one page in length; basic information regarding birth date, education, exhibitions, awards, publications and a signature was requested. Forms sent out in the 1970’s are two pages; the 1980’s files consist of lengthy responses in essay format to 7 or 8 questions. Two of the artists from the final group submitted audio tapes that have been transcribed. An alphabetical listing of artists can be found in the administration file. Fonds consists of Art Institute of Ontario records accumulated by Paul Bennett, in the course of his duties as Field Director / Adviser and later Director of the Art Institute of Ontario. The fonds consists of exhibition lists; manuscripts of articles, lectures, radio broadcasts, and a book; correspondence; art education pamphlets; materials related to a National Film Board production about the artist; papers about other artists; memorabilia from the Arts and Letters Club, Toronto; photographs and papers relating to Tom Thomson; and a source book on Arthur Lismer prepared by Marjorie Lismer Bridges.

Collection consists of correspondence between Avis Lang Rosenberg and Jack Chambers over a three-year period, slides created for the proposed book, transcriptions of taped interviews, contents of a notebook, poetry and prose written by Chambers, research notes, Lang’s writings on Chambers, exhibition catalogues and a private press publication containing illustrations by Chambers. Much of the material is present in photocopied form. File titles were assigned by Avis Lang, except where square brackets are used. The collection is arranged in a single series.

Fonds consists of records of the artistic and academic career of Barbara Astman, chiefly in Toronto from the 1960s to the first decade of the 21st century, including photographs of her projects and exhibitions, correspondence and textual documentation of projects, personal and other photos and journals, and some audiovisual materials.

Fonds consists of the archival contents of Betty Goodwin’s studio, including sketchbooks and notebooks in which she drew and recorded inspiration and ideas; loose sketches and notes; found and manufactured objects retained for their aesthetic or inspirational qualities; printing plates; folders containing inspirational found images and the artist’s re-workings of same; photographs of the artist and her work spaces; folders and a maquette relating to proposals for public commissions; a small amount of personal correspondence and publicity material; photographic documentation of her artwork; her numerous awards and honourary degrees; and video documentation of Goodwin’s dance collaborations.

Fonds consists of the records of the Canadian Art Club, including minutes of the organization’s meetings, constitution and by-laws, membership lists, photographs of artworks, documents of incorporation (1909) and ultimate dissolution (1930s) and club financial records in the form of ledgers and a collection of bills and receipts. Materials related to club exhibitions and dinners are supplemented by an extensive collection of clippings from reviews in newspapers of the day. Correspondence forms a significant portion of the papers, especially that to and from Edmund Morris, secretary of the club for several years. Fonds consists of records relating to the life and work of the artist and author Charles William Jefferys. It includes the artist’s correspondence, notebooks, research materials and manuscripts of his written work. Also included in this fonds are the research materials compiled by Robert Stacey, the artist’s grandson, about all aspects of the life and work of Jefferys, including information on all Jefferys’ writings and art, articles and reviews published by and about Jefferys, as well as information about the artist’s personal life, professional activities and travels. Stacey also conducted research on the Jefferys family history. Fonds consists primarily of a series of notebooks created by Dennis Burton, containing writing, sketches, photographs, correspondence and ephemera, and recording the artist’s daily activity and thoughts on a wide range of subjects and issues. Notebooks have been arranged in approximate chronological order. Fonds also includes photographs by Burton of various subjects, and a small amount of additional documentation including a file of letters from Avrom Isaacs to Dennis Burton. Collection consists of the research files kept by Doris McCarthy and Lora Carney, including exhibition notices, press releases and invitations, photocopied articles, hand-written sheets containing references and notes, a few slides and photographs, some personal correspondence, 2 theses, and a binder of copied material relating to Ann Davis’ book on Christiane Pflug. The Rae Simone file contains 12 black & white photographs, the Carolyne Dukes file contains 10 slides, and the Marian Scott file contains a signed letter and transcript of an interview with Doris McCarthy. The files were kept for the purpose of publishing a book on Canadian women artists and cover artists from across the country from the 19th century to the early 21st century. There are files on a few male artists integrated into the sequence, added by Prof. Carney. Exhibition catalogues have been removed and integrated into the library collection. A list of these catalogues is available. A list of the original file names is also available. The collection is arranged in a single series by artists’ last names, preceded by a few geographical files, arranged by province. Files containing only one or two records have been combined by the archivist in a ‘miscellaneous’ file for each letter of the alphabet.

Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence to Douglas Duncan as director of the Picture Loan Society in Toronto between 1936 and 1966, and his personal correspondence with Norman Endicott and their friends in common during the 1920s. Also included are records of Canadian artist David Milne from the 1950s and British painter Robert ‘Scottie’ Wilson from about 1945 to 1970; both were clients of Douglas Duncan and friends of Norman Endicott. Fonds consists chiefly of correspondence to Edmund Morris as an artist and as secretary of the Canadian Art Club, Toronto (extant 1907-1915). Materials relating to the art club were received predominantly between 1906 and 1913 and deal with the membership of the club, with artworks and with art publications. Correspondents include artists Peleg Franklin Brownell, Edmond Dyonnet, Clarence Gagnon, James Kerr-Lawson, Ernest Lawson, James Wilson Morrice, Alexander Phimister Proctor, Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Côté, Horatio Walker, Homer Ransford Watson and poet Duncan Campbell Scott. Also included are letters written by Edmund Morris himself and a few received by other members of the art club. The approximately 800 items were originally in two letter-binders. Although most of the items are letters, the fonds also comprises exhibition notices, invitations, newspaper and journal articles, lists of artists and artworks, price lists, illustrations, prospectuses, lists of subscribers for memorials (etc.), invoices, as well as miscellaneous items such as visiting cards, envelopes, an abstract of land title, a telegram and a cancelled cheque.

The fonds consists of poetry and prose writings by Williamson; exhibition notices, press clippings and magazine articles concerning Williamson’s career; sketches and drawings related to sculpture projects; a Canada Council grant application made for an exhibition of Williamson’s work; and photographs of Williamson, her cabin, and her sculptures.
