The Highway Book Shop (HBS) fonds attests to the activities of the enterprise in promoting and publishing works by Northern Ontario authors. Moreover, the fonds also demonstrates the shop’s commitment to the preservation and documentation of local Northern Ontario history through publishing. It consists of the HBS’s administrative records from the publication side of the enterprise. These include financial records which consist of author agreements, invoices, statements of royalties, and annual reports. These documents give insight into the financial side of the publishing end of the HBS. The fonds also includes correspondence from Doug Pollard and other HBS editorial staff to authors working with the book shop or other external individuals and groups. It also contains Doug Pollard’s personal records which include letters, notes, and keepsakes.

The fonds also contains the HBS published works and includes various manuscripts, publication specifications, and notes from authors that had published with the HBS over the course of its history. Manuscripts that were rejected but were never returned can also be found in this fonds. Furthermore, the fonds also contains many original photographs and sketches that were used in the publication process. Most notably are photographs (original and reproductions) of Haileybury and Cobalt in the late 19th and early 20th century. Examining the drafts, revisions, and proofs provides insight into how the HBS produced various works from the early 1970s until 2010. The fonds are of special interest to researchers of publishing history, business history, and Northern Ontario history.

File consists of a two-page typed, annotated history of Muirhead Stationers Limited. This history was most likely written by an employee at Muirhead Stationers.

File consists of records created by the Hope Cheese Factory, 1867-1885. It includes: Declaration of the Hope Cheese Factory, 14 Oct 1867; Declaration of the amount to Stock, 14 Jan 1871; Report 1871; Annual Reports 1872, 1874, 1875, 1876, 1877, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1884, 1885.

Fonds consists of eighty seven (87) invoices, cancelled cheques, and receipts pertaining to Irving Margles' clothing store in downtown Port Hope, 1918-1936. Most of the cheques were written to suppliers of Margles' store, including a few related to Port Hope: Port Hope Hydro Electric Commission, Weatherproof Rubber Coat Company, William Currie, International Association of Lions Clubs (Port Hope), Arcade Chain Stores (O. Pattenick, Prop.), W. J. Highfield Victoria Dairy.

Item is a letter to William Furby "Mr. Editor" signed J. Knowlson, Cavan 18 Dec 1837. Letter mentions the 1837 Upper Canada Rebellion.

Material contained in the Rexe fonds spans the years 1969 to 2005 with the bulk of material dating from 1979 to 1991. The collection contains materials pertaining to Rexe’s personal and professional matters, including material from his election campaigns beginning in the late 1970s to his work on Peterborough City Council 1980-87 and later 2003-06. The collection contains much correspondence, City Council memoranda and meeting agendas, planning documentation and reports, news clippings, personal notes, PCG reports and studies, court transcripts, legal invoices, and more.

The collection is organized into four series, Series B and C comprising the bulk of the collection.

Series A contains materials related to Rexe’s early teaching years and career(s) before re-entering politics in the 1980s.

Series B contains materials from his years on City Council 1980-87, and is the largest and most extensive part of the collection.

Series C gathers materials pertaining to his legal matters, particularly Kazowski vs. Rexe (see biographical note, below); and finally,

Series D contains materials from his later career(s), including his planning and consulting work (with Public Consulting Group, Inc.), his years teaching at Kenner Collegiate and Crestwood Secondary schools, his graduate work at Trent University, and his return to city politics in the early 2000s.

File consists of two (2) leases for store houses, 1879-1881. (1) Lease, John Hunter to Thomas Greenwood and Produce Dealers, leasing the brick structure with a stone foundation on the east side of Mill Street, 1879; (2) Lease, James Simpson and Thomas Greenwood, Grain and Wool Merchants to lease a brick structure with a stone foundation on the east side of Mill Street, 1881.

The fonds is divided into five series. This arrangement reflects the original order of the records as they were maintained by James Perrin. MG 3-0-1, Sports Committee Files, consists of agendas, minutes, correspondence, questionnaires, registration forms and photographic prints pertaining to the Canadian National Exhibition Association, Power Boat Committee, a sub-committee of the Sports Committee.

Series MG 3-0-2, CNE Publicity Files, consists of correspondence, news releases, and photographic prints documenting the promotion of various CNE events such as Aquarama, Dog Swim, Mayor's Bathtub Derby, Horse Show, Dairy Princess, and the Miss CNE contest by James G. Perrin & Associates.

Series MG 3-0-3, Photographs, consists of photographic prints of the Miss CNE contest, and various waterfront activities. Series MG 3-0-4, Scrapbooks, consists of two volumes, dated 1975-1980 and 1980-1981, containing photographic prints, newspaper clippings, and printed material. Series MG 3-0-5, Artifacts, consists of one item, a 1971 CNE Bathtub Derby trophy awarded to James Perrin in appreciation of his work on behalf of the competition.
