Lionel Sharples Penrose fonds
CA ON00009 F 4323 · Fonds · Microfilmed 1993 (originally created 1938-1948)

Fonds consists of Dr. Penrose's working papers and statistical tables from his survey of familial mental illness. Dr. Penrose began his survey of familial mental illness in 1943, first at the Ontario Hospital in London, and later at Queen Street Mental Centre in Toronto and other Ontario mental institutions. The object of the survey was to study the constitutional background of familial mental illness by two methods. First, the genetic relationship between the mental illness of a patient with that of a close relative was examined in terms of psychiatric diagnosis. Second, the ages of onset (first admittance to a mental hospital) of mentally illed patients were compared to those of their relatives who were also mentally ill. This microfilmed survey consists of items 70/1 and 70/2 (list numbers assigned by the University College London Library) of the Lionel Sharples Penrose Papers held at the University College London Library. The first item in 70/1 is a bound volume which is comprised of entries of personal information of about 1000 pairs of patients with mental illnesses and their relatives and includes the following data: name; age on first admittance; diagnosis; hospital; reference number; and date of birth. The information of these patients are grouped into the following pairs: father and daughter; mother and son; mother and daughter; brother and brother; brother and sister; sister and brother; and sister and sister. This grouping scheme permits an analysis of the factors of age of onset of psychosis and sex in familial mental illness. The second item in 70/1, "Index of Canadian Material", consists of data of over 3000 families and includes the following information: family index number; sex; year of birth; age on first admission or age of death; diagnosis; and relationships between family members diagnosed with mental illnesses. 70/1 also contains patients' exercise books and letters from patients. 70/2 contains statistical tables, graphs, hand-written notes, and mathematical calculations examining the age of onset of psychosis and sex of family members. Also included in item 70/2 are 6 typescript copies of "Age of Onset and Sex in Familial Mental Illness", written and presented by Penrose at the American Psychiatric Association meeting in May 1944, as well as one typescript copy each of "Age of Onset Correlations for Conditions Due to Additive Factors", "The Genetical Causation of the Psychosis", and "Survey of Related Patients Admitted to Ontario Hospitals with Special Reference to Age of First Admittance".
