Material covers Burlington’s history as documented by the Hamilton Spectator covering local news from the late 20th century. The collection consists of a mix of newspaper clippings and positive print images on (usually) glossy photo paper. There are occasionally cropping marks and measurements in grease pencil on some of these images when they were used for publication.

The collection consists of technical records of CPR's Mechanical Department created as they built and maintained the railway’s steam fleet. Before the drawing process began, the Chief Mechanical Engineer would determine the locomotive’s amount of power output and the size of cylinders. The driving wheels and boiler pressure had to be designed together with the wheel arrangement to meet the specified weight and clearance restrictions. Once this was determined the drawing was produced on paper, then traced on linen. All drawings were done by hand using a triangle and compass. When completed, the drawing would be signed off by the chief mechanical engineer.

Original drawings never left the CPR headquarters in Montreal, instead a negative of the drawing would be sent to the various shops throughout Canada. There they would print as many Vandyke copies of the drawing needed. When an original drawing was determined to be invalid due to its subject being cancelled or redesigned, due to new standards or because it was subject to damage, it was superseded by a new drawing. The original drawing would have an S placed on it with a reference to the new drawing number. It was also evident if a drawing was a replacement for a superseded original because of a letter at the end of a drawing’s number, for instance drawing E-58-L-0325-B.

In 1907, 350 drawings were required to create the engine and tender, by 1928 it took 1100 drawings. This fact, and the increased number of staff, indicates the growth and importance of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The collection is comprised of three series. Series CPD-1 consists of 25,066 technical drawings of CP steam locomotives. Series CPD-2 is a card index with circa 15 metres of cards. The Department used index cards to organize and track the drawings, including, for example, indicating which drawings had been superseded. Series CPD-3 consists of 27 booklets, a partial set of drawing lists issued for specific locomotive classes. CPR engineering and car department drawings are not included in the collection.

This sous-fonds contains records pertaining to Sister Margaret Ferris’s education, professional career, artistic endeavors, personal life, and travels. Sister Margaret Ferris was an avid academic and eventually became an instructor. There are various records from her academic pursuits present here, including her many degrees and certificates, research notes, papers, theses, report cards, transcripts, photographs, a scrapbook, and regalia from her Doctorate commencement ceremony. Based on her areas of interest in her studies, she wrote and published a book in 1993 called Compassioning: Basic Counselling Skills for Christian Care-Givers which was translated into Chinese in 2010. Drafts, correspondence with publishers, English and Chinese editions of the book, and material from the book launching party are included. There are also records from when she was teaching. These records are primarily concerned with her career as an instructor at St. Peter’s Seminary and the adaptations of Compassioning: Basic Counselling Skills for Christian Care-Givers as course books for classes at the University of Western Ontario, but there is also a speech by Sister Margaret and her Stewards in Catholic Education Award.

Sister Margaret was an artist, and she created the design for the cards and pamphlets of the congregation’s 2004 Jubilee celebration, which was her Golden Jubilee. Original artworks, preliminary sketches, and replicas are included in this sous-fonds. She was also an avid traveler and photographs, travel diaries, a scrapbook, and ephemera from these trips are present. She made trips to Yellowknife, Quebec, Peru, Florida, California, Rome, and a pilgrimage to France. On the trip to Rome, she acted as a correspondent for the Catholic News Times. There are also personal memorabilia, such as photographs, scrapbooks, a papal blessing, a yearbook from St. Patrick’s High School where she was principal, and an invitation to the 1976 Opening of the Ontario Legislature reception.

Records contained in this fonds primary document the material culture of Burlington Public Library’s history predominantly from 1935 to 2009.

By the late 1990s to the early 2000s, Burlington Public Library’s governing and corporate records as well as marketing and promotional material gradually shift from physical format to born digital content. Current information such as library guidebooks, board minutes, annual reports and strategic plans from 2019 and onward are accessible online via the library’s website located under the about tab.

Fonds primarily consists of material on the history of the Dominion Observatory, and technical and graphic material covering its 15-inch telescope and lens. The fonds is arranged into two series: DOC-1) Textual records; and DOC-2) Photographs. Series DOC-1 consists of 12 files of textual records on the history of the Dominion Observatory, including original correspondence, programming, and research documents created by Observatory staff, as well as subject research files created by Museum staff. The files often contain a few photographs that relate directly to the textual material in their files. Series DOC-2 consists of photographs, slides and negatives illustrating the construction of the Dominion Observatory, the 15-inch telescope, staff, interior and exterior images of the building. The lantern slides in the series seem to have been used for public lectures and educational programs. There are also approximately 300 black and white 9.5 x 11.5 cm photographic prints that may be observational data.

D.B. Emmons Fonds

Fonds consists of material relating to D.B. Emmons’ work as a dairy research scientist at the Canada Department of Agriculture from 1958 to 1996. Copies of Emmons’ articles, publications and reports, either written alone or with colleagues, on basic research regarding milk, butter and cheese and on improvements on the production of these dairy products. Emmons also worked on larger questions such as multi-component milk pricing and formulas for predicting cheese yields. Emmons’ professional correspondence 1953-1986 includes internal memos and correspondence with external researchers, with private and public research institutes and international bodies. The Workbook series contains 153 scientific lab books related to standardized analysis of milk and cheese as well as new research on these products. The Photograph and Slide series contains individual and group photos of Emmons’ colleagues at the Department of Agriculture. The slides relate to Emmons’ travels to conferences and tours of dairy facilities in North America, Europe and Asia. There are also slides for his presentations, as well as figures and tables that were used in his reports and publications.
