La collection renferme des documents techniques des services de traction et de matériel remorqué du Chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique ltée (CFCP) de l’époque lorsque la société fabriquait et entretenait son parc de locomotives à vapeur. Avant de commencer le processus de dessin, l’ingénieur mécanicien en chef déterminait la puissance de sortie de la locomotive et la taille des cylindres. La conception des roues motrices et de la chaudière ainsi que la disposition des essieux devaient respecter les restrictions de poids et de dégagement. Une fois ces éléments déterminés, le dessin était produit sur papier, et puis tracé sur du papier lin. Tous les dessins étaient réalisés à la main à l’aide d’un triangle et d’un compas. Une fois terminé, l’ingénieur mécanicien en chef vérifiait et signait le dessin.

Les dessins originaux ne quittaient jamais le siège du CFCP à Montréal, mais des négatifs des dessins étaient envoyés aux divers ateliers au pays. Là, on imprimait autant de copies vandykes du dessin que nécessaire. Lorsqu’un dessin original était jugé invalide en raison de l’annulation ou de la modification de son sujet ou de l’adoption de nouvelles normes ou parce qu’il était endommagé, il était remplacé par un nouveau dessin. Le dessin original était marqué d’un « S », avec une référence à l’identifiant du nouveau dessin. Le fait qu’un nouveau dessin était la révision d’un dessin original était indiqué par une lettre à la fin de l’identifiant, par exemple : E-58-L-0325-B.

En 1907, 350 dessins étaient requis pour la fabrication d’un moteur et un tender, mais en 1928, il fallait 1 100 dessins. Ce fait, ainsi que l’augmentation du nombre d’employés, montre la croissance des services de génie mécanique au fil du temps.

La collection comprend trois séries. La série CPD-1 se compose de 25 066 dessins techniques des locomotives à vapeur du CFCP. La série CPD-2 est un classeur de fiches contenant environ 15 mètres de fiches. Le service utilisait des fiches pour le classement et le suivi des dessins techniques, par exemple pour indiquer quels dessins étaient remplacés par d’autres. La série CPD-3 se compose de 25 livrets, un groupe incomplet de listes des dessins créés pour des classes de locomotives particulières. Les dessins des services d’ingénierie et des voitures du CFCP ne figurent pas dans cette collection.

Sister Margaret Ferris sous-fonds

This sous-fonds contains records pertaining to Sister Margaret Ferris’s education, professional career, artistic endeavors, personal life, and travels. Sister Margaret Ferris was an avid academic and eventually became an instructor. There are various records from her academic pursuits present here, including her many degrees and certificates, research notes, papers, theses, report cards, transcripts, photographs, a scrapbook, and regalia from her Doctorate commencement ceremony. Based on her areas of interest in her studies, she wrote and published a book in 1993 called Compassioning: Basic Counselling Skills for Christian Care-Givers which was translated into Chinese in 2010. Drafts, correspondence with publishers, English and Chinese editions of the book, and material from the book launching party are included. There are also records from when she was teaching. These records are primarily concerned with her career as an instructor at St. Peter’s Seminary and the adaptations of Compassioning: Basic Counselling Skills for Christian Care-Givers as course books for classes at the University of Western Ontario, but there is also a speech by Sister Margaret and her Stewards in Catholic Education Award.

Sister Margaret was an artist, and she created the design for the cards and pamphlets of the congregation’s 2004 Jubilee celebration, which was her Golden Jubilee. Original artworks, preliminary sketches, and replicas are included in this sous-fonds. She was also an avid traveler and photographs, travel diaries, a scrapbook, and ephemera from these trips are present. She made trips to Yellowknife, Quebec, Peru, Florida, California, Rome, and a pilgrimage to France. On the trip to Rome, she acted as a correspondent for the Catholic News Times. There are also personal memorabilia, such as photographs, scrapbooks, a papal blessing, a yearbook from St. Patrick’s High School where she was principal, and an invitation to the 1976 Opening of the Ontario Legislature reception.
