Stamped on the back cover are the initials of his wife: C.E.M. 1852. Written inside the front cover is the inscription: Jane Moir from her mother, July 1853. An unknown hand at a later date has annotated each manuscript with its publication history or lack thereof.

The manuscript is not dated . The date range has been assigned by references in the text. The trip took place after the death of Voltaire in 1778 but before the climbing of Mont Blanc which occurred in 1786. The manuscript is signed by Ralph Sheldon.
