Collection consists of material supporting the Canadian Naval Technical History Association's (CNTHA) Naval Technical History Project in regards to the technical advances made by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) in the years following the Second World War. Includes books, articles, papers, booklets, notes, technical drawings and various other documents covering a wide variety of subjects, including shipbuilding, ship repairing, Canadian patrol frigates, engineering, helicopters, hydrofoils, sonar, history, organization, personnel, submarines, training and weapons. Also includes books and magazines pertaining to marine and naval architecture, technical drawings of HMCS Crescent, HMCS Crusader, HMCS New Liskeard and Bras d'Or during the 1950s and 1960s, a United Aircraft of Canada design and acquisition proposal regarding the DDH 280 class main propulsion machinery, transcripts of interviews conducted by the Canadian Navy Defence Industrial Base (CANDIB) and developments in Canadian naval sonar technology. Fonds consists of textual records and photographs spanning Vice Admiral Brodeur’s educational and naval career from 1947 to 1987 and post retirement activities to 2012 but predominantly to 2007. It is arranged in a rough chronological order, consisting of twenty-seven series of records corresponding to different functions, activities, institutions or offices that Brodeur occupied during his educational and naval careers and subsequently into retirement after 1987. Records include correspondence, lecture materials, term papers, certificates, notebooks, workbooks, personnel records, reports, biographical materials, schedules, operational records, conference materials, minutes of meetings, speeches, and other miscellaneous materials. These series comprise educational activities, career duties or postings, and retirement activities. There is also a series of colour and black and white photographs for the period up to 2011. Fonds consist of four briefs for the Honourable Mr. Mayhew which discuss the status of the Royal Canadian Navy, Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Army, as well as the status of the Canadian Forces in the Far East. Included are brief histories of Canadian military activity in Korea since the beginning of the Korean War, biographical sketches of principle Officers serving in Korea, and statistical reports on battle casualties, broken down by army unit and classification of casualty. Also included are descriptions of recreational activities offered to maintain the well-being of personnel, and lists of honours and awards given to personnel.

Fonds consists of a report entitled “Medical Report Congo” prepared during August to December 1960 by Wing Commander [W/C] R.L. Walsh. The report includes details on the medical support that was prepared for the Canadian Congo Force. Discussed are the factors considered when planning the support, the actual conditions encountered in the Congo, and the adequacy of the support. The report also includes an appendix which provides an immunization schedule and a record of hospitalizations and patient diagnoses.

Collection consists of materials accumulated during the writing, and editing process of the book "No Higher Purpose: The Official Operational History of the Royal Canadian Navy in the Second World War," Volume II Part I: September 1939-April 1943. These documents include English book extracts, administrative documents, correspondence, memos, map transparents and proofs, photocopies of primary sources, and photographs. There are also several files concerning the creation, editing, and translation process for the maps in the book, including the end papers. There are also topical research files compiled by the Naval history team, which include historian-generated lists of ships lost and convoys. The collection is divided into six series:

Fonds consists of twenty-one articles prepared by Derek M. Waller and one booklet entitled “The U-Boats that Survived – The Whole Story”. The articles and booklet detail the story of the German U-Boats that surrendered at the end of World War II, as well as those captured, interned and raised afterwards. The articles discuss the policy on surrendered U-boats established by the Allies at the Potsdam Conference in 1945 and Operations Deadlight, Pledge, Cabal and Thankful. Includes a “definitive list” of the surrendered U-boats.

Fonds consists of one compact disk with copies of documents from the Board of Inquiry on the collision of HMCS Kootenay and M/V Nord Pol in 1989. These documents include, but are not limited to: terms of reference of the inquiry; official statements of officers; official report of the collision; lists of witnesses, and transcripts of their evidence; the HMCS Kootenay’s damage report; and a copy of the Board of Inquiry’s report. The fonds also includes legal documents produced during the trial, including the Statement of Claim, Statement of Defence and Counter Claim, and Action for Damage by Collision. All documents that were withheld in accordance with the Access to Information Act are noted with a sheet indicating which pages have been removed.

Fonds consists of a manual “Guide to the Divisional System”. It was issued in 1975 on the authority of the Commander Maritime Command to provide advice, based upon experience, and greater detail to enable the effective application of the principles of the Divisional System. The manual is divided into twelve chapters and each chapter discussed such subjects as leadership, personnel documentation, postings, discipline and morale, etc. the various principles of the system such as leadership. The guide also explained the different responsibilities and roles of the Divisional Officer (DO), the Divisional Chief Officer (DCPO) and the Division (the subordinates), as well as the different rules in the Divisional System.

Fonds consists of photographs of minor naval vessels getting repairs and refits. The photographs were taken during the 1980s. Most of the photographs are of damaged equipment and/or sections of the ship that need to be replaced. Some of the ships photographed include: Acadian, PB 192 Detector, Port Dauphine, YTS 589 Loganville, PB 193 Captor, and PB 196 Nicolson and approximately fifty other named ships. Some of the photographs are accompanied by technical specifications on the ships. The specification list includes the model of ship, number of engines, dimensions and crew compliment.

Fonds consists of material compiled and written by Ian Davies pertaining to his research on Ferry Command. Most of the information refers to the BOAC Return Ferry Service Liberators crashes. Fonds includes numerous documents written by Ian Davies, maps and photographs. It also includes correspondence with DHH- Directorate of History and Heritage, photocopies of primary documents from the Ferry Command Accidents Investigation Branch, the British Airways Archives, Public Records Office material, personal testimonies, and logbooks. Fonds also includes five digital video disks (DVD) containing numerous scans of primary sources and electronic copies of some of Ian Davies’ material, such as RAF Ferry Command/45 Group Casualty Crew Assignment Cards and Crew Assignment Cards.
