Fonds consists of a British Admiralty publication that is part of the Confidential Reference Books (CB) series and is entitled “The Technical History and Index: A Serial History of Technical Problems Dealt with By Admiralty Departments Volume 3 Part 37 Inception and Development of the Northern Base.” The document was created in response to a request for an account of technical developments relating to the establishment and reduction of the Northern Base. The Northern Base was located at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, Scotland, United Kingdom. The base was used as Great Britain’s primary Northern Naval Base during the First and Second World Wars. This includes reports regarding communication throughout the islands; fuel and water supply; dockyard work; fleet repair work; and provisions required for the base and its ships.

Fonds consists of five volumes of various documents pertaining to the Advisory Committee on Northern Development (ACND). This includes minutes of meetings, correspondence, memoranda, maps, graphical records, numerical summaries and interdepartmental committee reports. The third volume includes a translation of a Russian document, entitled “In the Heart of the Arctic”, that was prepared by the Defence Scientific Information Service of the Defence Research Board in 1955. Among others, items discussed at the ACND meetings include the following: Inuit settlement, the Northwest Highway System, petroleum in the Arctic, proposed pipelines, oil exploration, arctic expeditions, US hydrographic operations, arctic re-supply, United States Air Force (USAF) activities, the Distant Early Warning Line, the Mid-Canada Line, airstrips in the Far North, navigation in the Hudson Strait and hydroelectric developments in the Yukon.

Collection consists of a diary of Flight Sergeant A.E. Martin, covering the period 16 February to 1 June 1943 during which time he was stationed with 14 (F) Squadron on Umnak Island in the Aleutians. His account focuses on the day-to-day experiences of an Air Force Senior Non-Commissioned Officer with abundant personal and contemporary detail. Accompanying the text are black andwhite photographs, many with corresponding negatives and captions. Also includes correspondence between Martin and Captain M.V. Bezeau, a historian at the Directorate of History in Ottawa.

Fonds consists of an article by Major A.G. Sangster, entitled “Some Mechanical Aspects of Exercise ‘Musk-Ox’”. Prepared for The Engineering Journal, the article describes the mechanical experience gained from the non-tactical exercise, which was undertaken by the Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force from February to May 1946. Discussed are the vehicles used, the operating conditions, the operation of components, as well as the methods of maintenance and repair.

Subseries consists of reports containing information and/or recommendations on the performance, design and operation of equipment. The reports detail the developments of armaments for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for use on aircrafts and other weaponry at the Air Armament Evaluation Detachment from 1954 to 1963. The reports mainly discuss the various military weapons and equipment for the RCAF’s aircrafts. The major subjects included are the testing of radars; Radar Armament System Exerciser (RASE), the Del Mar Target Tow System and many miscellaneous aircraft parts like voltage testers and depth charges. RCAF aircrafts are briefly mentioned in the context of the weapons that are armed onto them, or that are being tested out. Some of the principal authors include: NE Parsons; JJ Cairds; RV Darnbrough; CO Heffler; and WA Haynes. The series is arranged in numerical order by the report number.
