Henry Bull Wallis collection

Collection consists of textual records, photographs and documentary artifacts related to the involvement of Henry Bull Wallis in the defence against the Fenian Raids on Canada in 1866 and 1870, as well as related materials, assembled by his daughter, Rachel Wallis Black. The collection contains a letter sent by Colonel Butler to Henry Bull Wallis in June, 1870. Photographs include three cartes-de-visite photographs of Henry Bull Wallis, Colonel W. F. Butler and Colonel Bagot. The collection also contains a ribbon awarded to Henry Bull Wallis by the Ridgeway Battle-Field Association for service in the Battle of Ridgeway, near Fort Erie, Ontario, in 1866, as well as a Canadian General Service Medal awarded in 1899 for service defending against the Fenian Raid of 1870. Also included is a scrapbook of newspaper clippings from the Huntington Gleaner, written in 1936, regarding the history of the Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870.

Fonds consists of originals and photocopies of records of the Urquhart family of Charlottenburgh, Glengarry County. Fonds includes: the personal correspondence of Alexander and James Urquhart; family financial accounts; pathmaster's instructions; a certificate of military service for the War of 1812; a marriage contract, 1800; and a farm apprenticeship indenture, 1803. In addition to family records, the fonds also contains a petition for the formation of Glengarry County, 1827, and a school trustees' report, 1820.

Fonds includes Donald and Lydia McTavish's personal correspondence from Eastmain in 1863, Dakota in 1889, and Norway House in 1902 to family in Grafton, Upper Canada. References made include: family matters, fur trade, the Spokane Washington fire, western settlement and travel. Fonds also contains Donald McTavish's personal diary of a trip from Norway House to York Factory and Fort Churchill, written in 1908. In addition, fonds contains Lydia Christie's personal diary, 1886, and her draft literary manuscript, entitled "A Trip to Rupert House", 1883.

Fonds consists of incoming business correspondence, other business records (such as accounts, agreements, ledgers, and deed pool records), and journals and letterbooks, concerned with the fur trade as carried on by the North West Company and the Hudson's Bay Company in the Temiscaming District. The majority of the correspondents were fur traders and factors from various posts in the Temiscaming district; this correspondence is arranged alphabetically by post of origin, then chronologically within each post. Fonds also contains some personal correspondence from members of the Cameron family including: Elizabeth McTavish and Sophia Cameron (nieces of Angus Cameron), James Cameron (nephew of Angus Cameron) and Sophia Cameron (daughter of Angus Cameron). Fonds consists of original and photostatic copies of eight La Mothe family letters. The majority of the letters are from Guillaume to his brother Maurice and his nephew Maurice in Montreal during the years 1795-1798, while he was at Michilimachinac and St. Joseph Island. Also included are: a letter from Joseph N. Bosse to his wife, a receipt, a letter regarding the settlement of Captain La Mothe's effects after his death, and a letter dated Jan. 1, 1864, from the men under the command of A. Guillaume La Mothe, Chief of Police, Montreal, to A.G. La Mothe, praising his leadership and pledging their support. Correspondence concerns family matters and also contain references to native Indian affairs.
