Fonds consists of records documenting the activities, programs, finances, operation and history of the Jewish Vocational Services. Included are meeting minutes, photographs, correspondence, surveys, reports, financial statements, certificates, bulletins, newsletters, newsclippings, press releases, anniversary books, and one DVD.

Fonds contains the records of the Toronto Office (Central region) of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Services of Canada. The fonds consists primarily of textual records: minutes, correspondence, financial records, reports, immigration files, naturalization case files, social service case files and the records of attempts to trace missing individuals. There are also photographs of special events, speakers and arriving immigrants.

The fonds represents an important resource for the study of Canadian Jewry, especially when taken in conjunction with the JIAS National Office records at the Canadian Jewish Congress National Archives in Montreal, and those of the Western Office at the Library and Archives of Canada. It documents the means by which a particular Canadian ethnic community has dealt with the problems of rescue, settlement and government relations. These records also offer insight into the relationship between the Toronto Office and the other branches of JIAS, and invite comparison with similar agencies in the United States, as well as those of other ethnic groups in Canada.

The material collected includes information about the countries of origin, transportation routes, settlement and employment patterns of Jewish immigrants to Canada in the twentieth century. The documents also touch upon important related issues such as advocacy, sponsorship, admission processes, health and social problems.

These records cover several waves of immigration following the Second World War: Holocaust survivors in the late 1940s, Sephardic (North African) and Hungarian Jews in the 1950s, Russian and Czechoslovakian Jews in the 1960s, and additional Russians in the 1970s.

The records also contain significant information for those researchers looking to conduct genealogical research into Jewish immigrants and their descendants.

The fonds has been arranged with one sous-fonds, which contains the records of the National JIAS office in Montreal. In total there are 17 series. The Toronto office (main fonds) series are: 1. Board of Directors and Executive Committee Minutes; 2. Annual meeting proceedings; 3. Reports; 4. Legal ; 5. Administration; 6. JIAS Committees; 7. External committees; 8. Financial ; 9. Arrivals; 10. Immigration case files; 11. Social service assistance case files; 12. Photographs; 13. Miscellaneous. The National Office sous-fonds is divided into the following series: 1. National executive meeting minutes; 2. National annual meeting proceedings; 3. National annual reports; 4. Publications; and Photographs.

Series consists of reports sent to the Ontario Ministry of Health and related correspondence. Content includes program proposals, funding decisions, budgets, decisions regarding grants for diagnostic and medical equipment, operating plan submissions, statistics for various services and patient volumes, consultant reports, various signed agreements, and correspondence and reports related to hospital restructuring.

File 9.1.1 includes A Vision for the Future: March 2004 / The Multi Organ Transplant Program, University Health Network / A Proposal for Operational Funding Submitted to the Ontario Ministry of Health & Long Term Care.

File 9.1.12 includes Report on Anaesthesia Services at the University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital in the Context of Academic Anaesthesia Services in Ontario : Submitted March 2003 to Dr. David McCutcheon, Assistant Deputy Minister, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care / By Dr. W. John S. Marshall.

File 9.1.19b includes a signed copy of the Hospital Lifts Initiative (Agreement No. 947) from March 16, 2006.

The fonds contains a register of a regional hairdressing salon in the 1940’s. In addition to names of clients and their hometowns, prices for the services received have been noted. Photos of nurses, assistant nurses and nuns working at Notre-Dame Hospital in Hearst, in 1958, are also found in the fonds.

The fonds consists of textual documents related to Laurent Guindon’s career as an optometrist and of documents linked to the creation of the organization Les Amis du Collège de Hearst now Les Amies et Amis de l’Université de Hearst.

The collection contains photos dating from 1960 and 1961. The photos show nurses, assistant nurses and nuns working at Notre-Dame Hospital in Hearst.

File consists of plans and correspondence regarding furnishing the chapel at the Port Hope Hospital, 1968.

Series consists of Hospital Board and various committee minutes and financial records; Auxiliary minutes and related materials. It includes: Minutes of the Medical Committee, Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, Auxiliary, Planning Committee, Board Quality Management Committee, Hospital on Ward Street; Reports of AED Patient Services, President of the Hospital Auxiliary; Old Board of Directors Hospital Trust Minutes (six (6) leather bound books, 1911-); Port Hope Hospital Trust Ledger Books and Cash Books, 1910-1937.

Series consists of various books and other publications originally belonging to the Port Hope & District Hospital or members of its staff. It includes: History of the Hospital Scrapbook; "A History of Port Hope Hospitals, 1911-1980" (by Isabel Humble); Open House Guest Books, 1964 & 1980; Hospital Formulary - Pharmacy Department, 1978; "The Pre-Op Book;" "Anatomy and Physiology for Nurses," 1893; "Religion and Medicine," 1908; "Fever Nursing," 1887; "Surgical Nursing," 1899; "Nursing - Its Principles and Practice," 1900; "Port Hope Hospital Report," 1955; "Forgotten Heroes: The Canadians at Dieppe;" Port Hope Hospital Trust Register of Wills.

Series consists of material pertaining to the building of the Port Hope & District Hospital. It includes: Several rolls of hospital building plans and specifications; Construction Disbursements Ledger, 1955-1963; Records of contributions to the Building Fund; Minutes of the Building Committee, 1956-1958; Survey Analysis and Plan for the Port Hope and District Hospital prepared by G. A. Brakeley & Co., 1962; Hospital Building Fund, 1963-1966; Journal of Construction.

Series consists of various certificates and plaques awarded to individuals and the Port Hope & District Hospital for achievement. It includes: (1) Training School for Nurses - Mabel Ball Nursing Degree, 20 Aug 1919; (2) Appreciation Certificate to the Hospital Auxiliary for contribution to the community from the OMA and the Northumberland Medical Society; (3) Accreditation of the Port Hope & District Hospital, 1988 and 1993; (4) Congratulating the hospital on its 80th anniversary - citations from Jean Chretien, Christine Stewart (MP), Joan Fawcett, and Brian Mulroney; (5) Mounted certificate from the Canadian Police Association - Public Service Award. Item is a mounted novelty key and lock with a plaque reading "Key used on the occasion of the opening of the Lakeshore Heliport - Port Hope and District Hospital - October 28, 1983."

File consists of draft manuscripts on the topic, and a letter with two packages of Korean Ginseng Tea from the Sun Hung Food Ind., Co.

Series consists of miscellaneous files from the office of Gloria Bishop, Vice President, Public Affairs & Communications (1999-2002) that document departmental activities and public relations issues related to hospital mergers, building construction and naming projects, and infection control, among others. File 3.9.3 consists of a memo regarding Legionella pneumophila.

Series consists of miscellaneous publications or documentation collected or created by the Department of Public Affairs & Communications during their regular course of business.

File 3.4.1 contains memoirs from Dr. E.A. McCulloch, which were excerpted into UHN News (both print and online versions) in 2008. It also includes a series of anecdotes of Dr. McCulloch’s interactions with notable people: J.C.B. Grant, Arthur Worth Ham, L. Siminovitch, Roscoe Graham, K.J.R. Wightman, Ian MacDonald, Harold Johns, and William Boyd.

File 3.4.2 was originally sent to Dr. Bob Bell from Dr. Bernard S. Goldman and includes a hand-written note explaining the origins of the sculpture on Elizabeth Street.

File 3.4.4 contains three issues of Strategic Directions@uhn, a periodic update published by Public Affairs and Communications about the UHN Strategic Directions long-term planning process. These are from June 2011, Fall 2011, and Winter 2002.

File 3.4.6 contains issues 1 and 2 of Vision Insight, the newsletter of the Joint Oncology Program of The Toronto Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. There are two versions of Volume 1, Number 1 in this file—one dated February 19, 1996 and one dated February 26, 1996. The content of the two versions is similar with some changes to content, formatting and style.

Series consists of the printed issues of UHN News. UHN News made its debut on November 13th, 2000. It was a title change to the existing “Caring Together” weekly newsletter and continued its volume and issue numbering. The first issue of UHN News was therefore Volume 4, Number 46. UHN News was published by the Department of Public Affairs & Communications for and about the staff of the University Health Network, but the newsletter was also available throughout the hospital and therefore easily accessible to patients and visitors. Other than the change in title, the other key transformation for the hospital’s newsletter was that it was now also available as a “virtual” newsletter on the home page of University Health Network’s Corporate Intranet. While the same core news and information found in the paper version would also appear on the Intranet site, the online version was also designed to provide an expanded, more immediate, and more in-depth news service. Over time, the online news content increased as the content in the printed newsletter decreased.

There were occasional errors in the numbering of issues and volumes. Most notably in 2011, issues 1-10 are printed as Volume 15 while all subsequent issues starting with number 11 from 2011 are incorrectly printed as Volume 16. In 2012, the Volume is still listed as 16 but the issue numbering restarts at number 1. Therefore there would be two different issues listed as Volume 16, Number 11 etc., one from 2011 and one from 2012. The issues for April 10, 2012 and May 7, 2012 are also both listed at Volume 16, Number 4, and the next issue for July is listed as Number 6. For identification purposes it is therefore important to note the dates of the issues and not simply the volume and issue number.

The collection of issues is incomplete. No issues from Volumes 5-7 have been transferred to the Archives. Issues 1-19 of Volume 12 (2008) were not transferred to the Archives. Additional issues may be missing from each volume. The print newsletter ceased publication in 2012 with Volume 16, Number 11 (December 10, 2012).
