Jamaica Annals series
CA ON00279 HF01-S002 · Série · 1989-2011

These annals chronicle the daily lives of Sisters Ann Marshall, Katrina Rooney, and Nancy Sullivan while they performed charitable works in Annotto Bay, Jamaica. These records discuss their efforts in healthcare and education, including their donation to fix critical water problems in the Infirmary as well as setting up several educational programs to help children to learn and read. The annals also provide nuanced detail by describing the Sisters’ living quarters, thoughts about their works, and about the town itself. The sub-series also includes Katrina Rooney’s photographs. These images show Katrina Rooney teaching in school, posing with community members, and relaxing in her leisure time. These images offer a “snapshot” of life in Annotto Bay. A larger photo album along with a two folders of photographs also makes up this sub-series. The album’s images provide further examples of Annotto Bay life, and include photos of a trip to Jamaica made by Sisters Claudia and Francis Rossignoli. This sub-series also has records that detail the 2001 murder of Father Martin Royackers, who also lived and worked in Annotto Bay. He was a member of the Upper Canada Province of the Canadian Jesuits and had served Annotto Bay for six years. This news shocked and saddened the Congregation. They were upset to hear the news of the violent attack in a place they considered as a home. The Sisters set up a memorial liturgy in response to the news. The sub-series also includes several drawings from children to the Sisters.

CAVM Photograph Collection
Coleção · Reproduced 1960-2001 (originally created ca. 1908-1989)

The CAVM Photograph Collection was gathered by the National Aviation Museum over time in order to preserve a visual record of aviation in Canada. The Museum used these photographs in exhibits, for historical reference, for reference in constructing models, and for restoration projects. Some original photographs (prints or negatives) were added to the Museum’s permanent collection, but selections were also made from photograph albums, scrapbooks, and prints, that were then copied and returned. Contributors may have been the original photographers, sharing or donating their own work, or aviation enthusiasts or historians that had copied photographs from other collections. Many small groups of photographs were donated by individuals and families with connections to aviation. The Museum created preservation copy negatives of the selected photographs, giving each copy negative a sequential number. The Collection is arranged in three series: CAVM-1 Negatives, CAVM-2 Prints, and CAVM-3 Card catalogue. The card catalogue was created to facilitate access to the Collection. Each card has information on the photograph with a small print glued to the card as a visual reference. The catalogue has five Photographic Print (PP) sub-series: PP01 General Aircraft by Manufacturer; PP02 National Aviation Museum Collection (historical photographs of Museum aircraft or conservation photographs taken by Museum staff); PP03 People, Organizations, Events, Gliders/Blimps, Airports/Air Fields; PP04 Hawker Siddeley Canada; and PP05 Miscellaneous (Museum displays, events, public relations, staff, site, models and engines).

Edward F. G. White fonds
CA ON00259 SC57 · Fundo · 1884-1934

Fonds consists of Ted White’s daily diaries, bird observation journals, and notes and correspondence regarding time spent on the R.M.S. Nascopie, in the Canadian Arctic.

There are 29 daily diaries in this fonds. Most of these volumes contain daily appointments, travel itineraries, some bird sighting notes, addresses and accounts. The later books tend to have more bird sighting notes than the earlier ones. Four of these are slightly more
specialized and contain different information. These are the notebook of game shot, Alaska bird notes, a field diary, and a notebook with correspondence and bird list relating to the Eastern Arctic Patrol. The notebook of game shot lists the specimens White collected between 1893 and 1896, where they were collected, how many of each species were collected, and his accounts for his game shooting expeditions. The Alaska bird notes list
the birds sighted, and where they were seen, each day during a trip to Alaska in the summer of 1923. The field notes diary records birds sighted, as well as observations regarding behaviour. The notebook relating to the Eastern Arctic Patrol contains notes about the patrol, a note about 3 specimens of black ducks, a list of birds sighted during the patrol, and a map of the 1934 Eastern Arctic Patrol which shows its path and itinerary.

There are three bird observation journals. They cover the years from 1884 to 1911. The first book has a list of the species of specimens he collected, their sex, how many of each species, and their value. The rest of the book and the two other volumes have bird observation entries organized first by year and then by species. Each note indicates when in the year each species was spotted, and how common it was when seen. These are not very detailed notes.

Lastly, this fonds contains a folder of notes, correspondence, observations, copies of reports, meeting minutes, press releases, and maps regarding White’s trip aboard the R.M.S. Nascopie in 1934. This was part of the Eastern Arctic Patrol, and most of the materials deal with various issues surrounding bird life in the Arctic. He was asked to report on four issues specifically: keeping track of migratory birds, report on the relationship between natives and bird life, the possibility of developing an eider duck industry to aid in conservation, and to observe waterfowl species. There are reports by White dealing with each of these specific issues.

Edmund William Waltho fonds
CA ON00259 SC56 · Fundo · 1936-1964

Fonds consists of Waltho's bird observation journals.

Waltho organized his journals in two different ways; daily accounts of bird observations, or monthly summaries of the species observed in Toronto. The first ten volumes (Files 1-5) in this fonds are the daily observation journals, which date from 1954 to 1964. There is no volume for 1959. These are yearly diaries that Waltho used to record observations on the days he went bird watching. The notes are generally limited to the species spotted (referred to by their common names) and where he was when he observed them. Occasionally, Waltho notes information on birds nests that he found and the number of eggs observed.

The last five volumes (Files 6-10) are his monthly summaries of bird observations from Toronto. These are from 1936 to 1958, but not all intervening years are represented. These volumes are set up like a checklist - the first page lists the bird species and the other sheets check off the species observed each day in a month, with a total at the bottom of each column for the number of birds seen each day. The first volume also has a collection of 76 Wonder Trails by Ellsworth Jaeger, which are short newspaper stories about different species of wildlife, with an accompanying drawing of that animal in its daily life.

CPR Steam Locomotive Drawing Collection
CA ON00419 CPD · Coleção · ca.1881-1960

The collection consists of technical records of CPR's Mechanical Department created as they built and maintained the railway’s steam fleet. Before the drawing process began, the Chief Mechanical Engineer would determine the locomotive’s amount of power output and the size of cylinders. The driving wheels and boiler pressure had to be designed together with the wheel arrangement to meet the specified weight and clearance restrictions. Once this was determined the drawing was produced on paper, then traced on linen. All drawings were done by hand using a triangle and compass. When completed, the drawing would be signed off by the chief mechanical engineer.

Original drawings never left the CPR headquarters in Montreal, instead a negative of the drawing would be sent to the various shops throughout Canada. There they would print as many Vandyke copies of the drawing needed. When an original drawing was determined to be invalid due to its subject being cancelled or redesigned, due to new standards or because it was subject to damage, it was superseded by a new drawing. The original drawing would have an S placed on it with a reference to the new drawing number. It was also evident if a drawing was a replacement for a superseded original because of a letter at the end of a drawing’s number, for instance drawing E-58-L-0325-B.

In 1907, 350 drawings were required to create the engine and tender, by 1928 it took 1100 drawings. This fact, and the increased number of staff, indicates the growth and importance of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The collection is comprised of three series. Series CPD-1 consists of 25,066 technical drawings of CP steam locomotives. Series CPD-2 is a card index with circa 15 metres of cards. The Department used index cards to organize and track the drawings, including, for example, indicating which drawings had been superseded. Series CPD-3 consists of 27 booklets, a partial set of drawing lists issued for specific locomotive classes. CPR engineering and car department drawings are not included in the collection.
