Collection consists of photographs accumulated and used by members of the Directorate of History and Heritage (DHH) Naval Team, largely during the research and writing of Volume Two of the Official Naval History of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). The majority of the photographs are related to the time period covered in Vol. II, the Second World War (1939-1945). There are also some photographs dating from before and after the Second World War, as well as those used in other publications, particularly The Battle of the Atlantic by Roger Sarty. Also includes photographs used by Marc Milner, a Naval Team member. The collection is arranged chronologically into the 6 series:

Fonds consists of material pertaining to the 2011 change of command ceremony for the Commander Maritime Command (MARC). Command passed from Vice-Admiral Dean McFadden to Vice-Admiral Paul Maddison on 22 July 2011. Includes written speeches, a pamphlet, a newspaper clipping, printed photographs, copies of MARGENs (Maritime General Orders) 031-11 and 033-11, as well as a DVD entitled “Navy Dinner and Change of Command Ceremony, July 21-22, 2011”. Also consists of written material regarding the 2013 change of command ceremony for the Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy. Command passed from Vice-Admiral Paul Maddison to Vice-Admiral Mark Norman on 20 June 2013. Includes the Changed of Command Program (glossy publication), an administrative order dated 7 May 2013, the guest list, the master of ceremonies script, speaking notes for General Tom Lawson and Peter MacKay, correspondence, as well as the original file copy of the Change of Command Certificate. Also includes photographs of the Commanding Officers from the last mission in Kabul and a change of Command certificate between Major-general Michael Day and Major-General JR Feron in 2012.

Collection consists of 3 files of textual materials and photographs related to the death of Sgt. Ernest A. "Smokey" Smith. Most of the pages are from Contingency Operations Plan Valour (COP Valour), the plan kept by the Chief of the Land Staff for tributes and ceremonies on the event of Sgt. Smith's death. Also included are a print-out of slides used for briefing the Armed Forces Council (AFC) about COP Valour, a synopsis issued by AFC for the plan, a notice about flying the national flag at half-mast, and correspondence about Sgt. Smith donating his medals back to his regiment, the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. Also includes 43 photographs.

Fonds consists of documents detailing the preparations of developing a contingency plan (Operation Broadsword) for the deployment of a Canadian Land Force to the Persian Gulf in 1990. Includes staff checks, memoranda, briefings, reports, messages, powerpoint presentations and other documents. Arranged in alphabetical order by file title.

Collection consists of publications and files collected by Fred J. Mifflin. Includes speeches by the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff for 1979-1981, federal government discussion papers regarding a new national industrial development policy and Canadian participation in the Multi-National Force in the Sinai in 1981, the history of operational research in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), North-South relations, and Canadian maritime strategy. The collection is arranged in alphabetical order by subject group.

Fonds consists of material documenting Rear Admiral Denis Richard Boyle’s naval career during 1971 to 1987. The following appointments are covered: Director Maritime Systems Engineering (1971-1972); Director Maritime Management Requirements (1972-1974); Director Maritime Engineering and Maintenance (1974-1975); Director Maritime Engineering Equipment.(1975-1978); Command Personnel and Training Officer (1979-1983); and Director General Recruiting Education and Training (1983-1986). Some of the major subjects include ships design, ships maintenance and repair, marine engineering, mechanical engineering, destroyers, Canadian patrol frigates, military education and electrical engineering. The fonds is arranged in chronological order by position and then in alphabetical order by file title for each position.

Fonds consists of nominal lists of Canadians in the British flying services during 1914-1918 from a variety sources. Nominal lists range from RFC [Royal Flying Corps] direct entrants, accepted candidates for the Military Wing of RFC, RFC sailings, RFC Overseas lists, and unidentified entrance lists.

Fonds consist of files regarding ships, movements, repairs, losses, and reports on disposition of ships from 1942-1943. Types of ships can range from auxiliary cruisers, A/S ships, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, minesweepers, A/S yachts, and trawlers. The disposition of ships has been classified categorically and graded as either “allocated”, “effective”, “refitted”, or “repaired”. The names of ships that were reported on are also included. Includes memoranda with appendices.

Fonds consists of files regarding the organization and administration of 664 Squadron during the Second World War. Progress reports, squadron routine orders (parades, details of duties, guards, disciplines, recreation, etc.), monthly security reports, air ministry return serials, personnel occurrence reports [for officers and airmen], and strength return RCAF personnel reports are all included in the fonds. The fonds also includes Squadron routine orders and reports regarding monthly flying times and flying accidents.

Fonds consists of files regarding a court of inquiry, activities, progress reports, transport work tickets, delivery returns, photographs, injury reports, as well as both flying and road accidents of 666 Squadron during 1945. The fonds also contains a file on the final disbandment of the Squadron.

Fonds consists of: oversize binders of drawing of site plans for CFB Halifax during 1984-1989; station photographic plans of bases for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1950 and during 1957-1962; plots plans for naval establishments during 1961-1965; and miniature site plans for Canadian Forces Bases Halifax, Moncton, Esquimalt and Canadian Forces Stations Shelburne, St. John’s and Masset during 1988-1991.

Collection consists of scholarly material accumulated throughout Colonel Howard Coombs’ military and academic career. This includes manuals, handbooks, pamphlets and guides from a number of institutions, notably the Canadian Forces College (CFC). Also contains a collection of student papers written for a CFC course on operational art, as well as material, including Coombs’ written work, from several US Command and General Staff College (CGSC) courses. Fonds consists of a document in 1990 or 1991 outlining the structure of the support component of Joint Force Headquarters. This document details the various branches of the support unit and their responsibilities as well as the concept of support for the unit. Information on contingency planning and an example of a possible contingency deployment sequence are also included in the document.

Collection consists of textual and photographic records accumulated during the planning and execution of commemorative events to celebrate the Canadian Navy’s 75th and 100th. The documents for the 75th anniversary were originally produced or sent to Maritime Command Headquarters, Halifax, between 1979 and 1986. The records for the centennial event were generated at National Defence Headquarters from 2005-2010. anniversaries. There are 2 series:

Fonds consists of various documents prepared for members of the Naval Board Executive Committee, Naval Board, and Admiral’s Council to refer to during meetings held between 1997 and 2011.
