Katie Strowbridge fonds
CA ON00009 F 4600 · Fonds · [186-]-1912

Fonds consists of one keepsake album, one publication, and three photographs.

The keepsake album was won by Katie for "diligence" while a student at school in Alberton, Ontario in 1885 and presented by her teacher, J. Kerr. She won the album in December 1885 and it was dedicated by her mother in June of the next year. The album was originally made in Belfast, Ireland.

The album contains pasted-in items including pictures cut out from newspapers, advertisements from retail stores, business cards, greeting cards, and other items of unknown origin. The album also contains inscriptions from various individuals, dated from 1885 to 1899.

The inscriptions, mostly involving humorous poetry, were written by her relatives, schoolmates, and other individuals she met from Alberton, Dundas, Delhi, Cainsville, and St. Thomas Ontario. These include members of the Strowbridge, Van Sichel, Van Sickle, Applegat, Edy, Massen, and Cohoe families. Many of these families were, like the Strowbridges, of German extraction.

The companies mentioned in the album include J.V. Dynes of Hamilton; Grafton and Company, Dundas; J.W. Schram Boots and Shoes; Edwin G. Burt Fine Shoes; Oak Hall Clothes of Hamilton; and W.G. Boyes, stationer, of Woodstock.

The photographs include an unidentified tintype (most likely of Katie's parents John and Hannah), a carte de visite in a cardboard enclosure (produced by Park and Company of Brantford and inscribed on the back, "Mrs. William S. Brett, nee Katie Strowbridge"), and a hand-coloured photograph of Katie Strowbridge.

The fonds also contains a copy of "Nyal's Yearbook 1912" which was placed in the album, most likely by Margaret Strowbridge.

David L. Gibson collection
CA ON00009 F 4592 · Collection · ca. 1822-2010

Collection consists of photographs and other records, chiefly documenting the Ingersoll, Muskoka, Aylmer and St. Marys areas, collected by or given to amateur historian David L. Gibson. It includes photographs in several formats including cartes de visite, cabinet cards, tintypes, contemporary prints, and glass plate negatives and is comprised of two studio collections: the Hugill studios and the H.F. Robinson Studio. It also includes photographs and other records related to the Gibson and the Foulds families as well as records concerning David's personal research and family history.

As a child in the late 1920s, Gibson first befriended Edgar H. ("Ed") Hugill on Keewaydin Island in Muskoka where Hugill worked as the summer postmaster. Hugill operated a photo studio in Ingersoll, Ontario, initially in conjunction with his father, John, and later on his own. After Ed Hugill's death in 1955, the collection of negatives and photographs from the studio came into Gibson's possession. Gibson used the photos in writing books about Keewaydin Island and the Hugill studio.

Photographs in this collection consist of negatives and prints of family members and studio customers as well as interiors and exteriors of homes and businesses in the Ingersoll area, boats and cottages on Keewaydin and surrounding islands, and events in the Ingersoll and Muskoka areas.

Gibson also obtained the collection of another photographer, Harold Franklin ("Frank") Robinson, possibly through the estate of a Wilford Smith. The photographs included in this collection consist of individual and group portraits often taken at weddings, reunions, social events, and YWCA camps in Aylmer and St. Marys, Ontario.

Gibson was an avid genealogist. He gathered photographs documenting the Gibson as well as the Foulds families. The Foulds, David's maternal grandparents, were early settlers in the Brantford area and contemporaries and neighbours of Alexander Graham Bell. The photographs in this collection consist of family portraits, some of which were used to illustrate David L. Gibson's book on the Foulds family.

Untitled
CA ON00009 F 4536 · Item · 1854

Item is a one-page letter in manuscript ink on blue wove paper from Tom Elice (or Ellis), a runaway slave from Kentucky, to Mary Warner.

Mr. Elice's letter expresses both the excitement of his freedom and the pain of leaving his loved one behind. He writes of his new country, tells of catching up with mutual friends from home, and mentions that 'the girls' have joined the Methodist Church. He asks to be remembered to his former owners, William and Betsy Ellis of Falmouth, Pendleton County, Kentucky.

Written from Chatham, Ontario, the letter appears to be a reassurance of safety after a journey via the 'underground railroad' through Ohio and Michigan, so-called 'free states' that nevertheless were bound by the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, requiring all law enforcement officials to return runaway slaves. Bounties were posted on Tom and his six fellow fugitives, according to donor information.

The misspelling of the Ellis name suggests that the letter was written by someone else.

CA ON00009 F 4443 · Fonds · 1910-2003

Fonds consists of records documenting the work and operations of Thomas G. Brown Church Interiors and its two predecessor companies, PC Browne and Co, and Thomas G. Browne Church Decoration. Together, these companies represent three generations of the operation of a church interior decorating business in Ontario by the Browne family, spanning almost a century.

The Browne family decorated, designed, and restored ecclesiastical works of art and furniture primarily in churches of various denominations, but also in other places of worship, such as synagogues, convents, cemetery and mausoleum chapels, hospital and school chapels. Other projects include work in private homes and bench seating for a provincial court. The geographic scope of the Brownes' work covers much of Ontario, with some out-of-province projects as well.

The business was owned by three generarions of the Browne family: Peter Charles Browne, from 1905-1938 (under the name PC Browne and Co.); Thomas Grant Browne Sr., from 1938-1968; (under the name Thomas G. Browne Church Decoration) and Thomas Grant Browne Jr., from 1968-2002 (under the name Thomas G. Browne Church Interiors). The records in this fonds are those of the latter two generations: Thomas G. Browne Sr. and Thomas G. Browne Jr.

The records of Peter Charles Browne no longer exist, although the correspondence, project information, and photographs in the fonds do relate and refer to the earlier works of P.C. Browne. There are many examples where works in churches were created and/or restored by all three generations of the Browne family.

The records in this fonds document the particular projects and business practices of the church decorating company, through the project, design, and supplier files, as well as original artwork and photographs of church interiors documenting the Browne family's works. The fonds also documents the types of expenses incurred as a result of running a small business of this nature in Ontario over several decades., through bills, invoices, ledgers and other financial records.

The arrangement of the fonds reflects the Brownes' respective record keeping systems. Thomas G. Browne Sr. filed his records chronologically by year, whereas Thomas G. Browne Jr. filed his records by project or subject.

Fonds has been arranged into 18 series.

Fonds consists of records generated or accumulated by Zdzislaw Przygoda during his practice as a structural engineer, in the firm of Przygoda and Associates Ltd. Consulting Engineers between 1954 and 1995.

The records consist mainly of architectural drawings, and include sketches, technical drawings and conceptual designs for structural elements, equipment, and building additions.

Textual records in a limited number of project files include building specifications, correspondence with architects, contractors and clients, site investigations, calculations, preliminary proposals, equipment reports, meeting minutes, labour agreements and instructions.

Volumes often consist of soil test boring reports of sites, as well as feasilbility studies, reports and specifications.

Photographs are found in four of the series, and depict construction of St. Wilfred's Church, The Liberty Street Buildings, Maple Leaf Mills Ltd. Saskatoon, and John XXII School. Photographs also include negatives of plans for the Maple Leaf Ltd. project in Saskatoon.

The records have been arranged into 60 series based on the building location of individual projects. The series pertains to certain aspects of the project related to Przygoda rather than a complete record of the building development. Several series include numeric project codes in which the first two digits represent the year the project was started followed by digits assigned sequentially. As this numbering system was not maintained, series were assigned arbitrarily although the numbering system was noted where applicable.
