Congregational Health
File · 1989-2009
Part of Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship fonds

The board would 'check in' with the thoughts and feelings of the congregation by offering surveys and encouraging feedback. In 2009, they launched a formal project to determine the needs of the congregation and prepared a draft of recommendations for "a way forward" to ensure LUF was serving the community in the best way they could.

Reports and Board Material
Subseries · 1966-2011
Part of Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship fonds

Textual documents and 3 CD-Rs with pictures and videos from events and moments. While the administrative assistants over the years did an admirable job updating binders with related material, there was substantial material that was not filed with the Board minutes and seemingly was gathered from the administrators desk when they moved out of their building on Algoma street. This included board minutes, reports, and correspondence that directly related to the way that LUF governed their institution. This subseries reflects the way the alphabetical arrangement had limitations: there was material that did not neatly fall into the categories they chose. Files relating to organization and function that did not fit into other series are stored here, such as “fellowship life.” Includes also bylaw and policy information, financial statements and reports, and board members’ correspondence.

Jim Bishop provided a binder to the administrator around 2006 that includes his correspondence with the CUC board and various other members, and booklets and packages on congregational health. It outlines the role that Bishop had in the fellowship and the work he was trying to do for the community. Bishop was a prominent person in the Thunder Bay community for much of 1980s and 90s.

Board Minutes
Subseries · 1958-2011
Part of Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship fonds

Earlier minutes are transcribed accounts of the board meetings, while later minutes are formal agendas with an outline of the board’s discussion and their concerns of that week. UU recommends the board organize their records by year which is what the LUF did, using binders to sort time periods. The original arrangement was not disturbed; the binders were replaced with folders. Length of board minutes vary.

Governance
Series · 1958-2021
Part of Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship fonds

The LUF was formed in 1958 by a group of Unitarians interested in having a local fellowship. The board was made up of members that had the time and the interest in being involved with the establishment and strengthening of the fellowship.
Since incorporation in 1984, the LUF has had an executive board that is elected by the congregation at the Annual meetings. In the beginning, the board consisted of several members that met at each other's homes, and held open meetings in local community spaces up until the acquisition of their own building in 1983. When they moved into the Algoma street building in 1984, they voted to incorporate and became a fellowship within the CUC. After incorporation, the board meetings became more formal and committees began reporting to the board in a more formal fashion.
The board oversees daily and long-term operation, while under the board of directors are various committees and chairs who run programs and organize services. Majority of the board and committee members are volunteers, while there are some paid staff. Governance material includes board minutes and committee reports, financial statements, information pertaining to personnel, and CUC and UUA connection.
