Tweedsmuir Histories
Collection · [1897-2004]

Collection predominantly contains oversized scrapbooks compiled by local Aldershot and Nelson branches of the Women's Institute, under the direction of The Federated Women’s Institute of Ontario with a purpose to document village histories. These types of scrapbooks known as Tweedsmuir Histories, were named after the Governor General's wife Lady Tweedsmuir, who encouraged Women’s Institute branches to preserve the history and the changing environments of rural communities. Scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, maps, as well as handwritten and typed historical accounts. Also included in this collection are administration records for the Nelson Women's Institute.

Concerned Farm Women fonds

This fonds consists of materials reflecting the concerns, research and activities of Concerned Farm Women from 1981 to 1988.
It consists of administrative records including documents reflecting the group’s aims and objectives, meeting minutes (primarily 1983), membership lists (1983-1988), pamphlets, newsletters (1982-1988), project activity reports, and correspondence. Scrapbooks and folders of newspaper clippings reflect the group’s activities as well as the financial crisis facing farmers in the 1980s. Two videocassettes also review the history and accomplishments of the organization. Correspondence, conference materials and speech scripts reflect the group’s lobbying efforts. Books, reports, articles and promotional material from other agricultural organizations concerning the financial state of agriculture in Ontario and across North America informed the group’s research and activities. Finally, two books published by the group: (1) The Farmer Takes a Wife: a study by Concerned Farm Women, resulting from a 31-page survey of approximately 600 Bruce and Grey County farm women, and (2) To Have and To Hold: a guide to property and credit law for farm families in Ontario” are included in the fonds.

Le fonds du Carrefour francophone de Sudbury est un fonds complet, qui témoigne des principales activités socioculturelles, des réalisations et de la gestion et de l’évolution de l’organisme, depuis sa fondation avec le Père Régimbal, jusqu’à la célébration de son cinquantenaire en l’an 2000, et même jusqu’à nos jours.

En effet, composé de plusieurs dossiers qui permettent de retracer l’histoire générale du Centre des jeunes et du Carrefour francophone, les dossiers qui composent le fonds documentent l’évolution de l’organisation, de sa fondation et de son mandant, d’abord en tant que le Centre des jeunes de Sudbury, Inc. jusqu’à sa transformation au Carrefour francophone de Sudbury. Ainsi, les documents témoignent de tous les changements qui se sont effectués au sein de l’organisation, tant physique (par exemple, le projet de la Place St-Joseph), que culturel.

Le fonds d’archives du Carrefour nous renseigne d’abord sur la gestion et l’administration de l’organisation, tout comme sur les personnes ayant joué un rôle dans la naissance et la promotion du Centre des jeunes, dont notamment le Père Albert Régimbal. En général, le fonds comprend des documents sur l’embauche et les activités du personnel et, de manière plus spécifique, sur la succession des divers directeurs et directrices générales de l’organisation. Le fonds contient tous les procès-verbaux et documents afférents des Assemblées générales annuelles et des différents conseils et comités dont se compose le Carrefour. Ces documents, en plus des divers dossiers de correspondance et des rapports de la gestion financière (par exemple : états financiers, rapports budgétaires, etc.), permettent un aperçu complet de l’évolution du Carrefour depuis sa fondation. Les dossiers de gestion, ainsi que quelques photographies, témoignent des réalisations administratives du Carrefour, telles que ses déménagements et changements de locaux et la transition du « Centre des jeunes » au « Carrefour francophone ».

Les documents de gestion, tels que les demandes de subventions, documentent aussi la collaboration entre le Carrefour et divers organisations au niveau régional, provincial et national. Cette collaboration est surtout évidente avec l’Association des canadiens-français en Ontario (ACFO), l’organisation Centraide, l’Assemblée des centres culturels de l’Ontario (ACCO) et le Conseil des arts de l’Ontario (CAO).

Le fonds contient aussi des documents illustrant la promotion et l’élaboration de ses divers ateliers, cours, camps et programmes culturelles et sportives offert à la communauté sudburoise. Ainsi de nombreux dossiers portent sur la création et l’évolution du programme après-l’école « Le Tremplin », un programme ayant eu une influence considérable sur l’histoire et le développement culturelle même du Carrefour. On retrouve aussi plusieurs documents de programmation et divers photographies qui témoignent des activités et des cours offerts au Centre/Carrefour.

De façon générale, les documents de ce fonds d’archives permettent aussi de retracer l’évolution, la promotion et le développement de divers autres programmes pour enfants, tels que la Clé de Sol et la Clé de Fa, le Camp magique et la Grenouillerie. Les nombreuses photographies, témoignent aussi des camps d’été pour enfants, d’abord le camp de l’Île-aux-chênes et, plus tard, le camp Ouaouaron et Ça Bouge.

À ce titre, mentionnons que les photographies et diapositives que l’on retrouve dans ce fonds d’archives, témoignent aussi des activités, des célébrations et des festivités organisées par le Centre et le Carrefour francophone, tout comme elles présentent divers groupes culturels et musicaux associés au Centre des jeunes pendant les années 1960, 1970 et 1980 : on remarque, parmi d’autres, la Jeunesse musicale, les Troubadours, les Majorettes, les Jeux rythmiques, ainsi que les Journées Rencontres, les Soirées des Aviseurs, les danses sociales et les Carnaval d’hiver.

Le fonds d’archives du Carrefour francophone, par son intégrité et sa complétude témoigne également de la communauté francophone de Sudbury et du réseau socio-culturel de la ville mais aussi de l’Ontario français.

The acquisitions are worth mentioning because of the variety of documents but also because of the significance of the archives collected.

This fonds consists of: minutes, correspondence, scrapbooks, reports, financial records, as well as printed materials. It also contains tape recordings, budget books, photographs, a travel diary, and notes on various family histories.

It consists of the agreement with LEAF National, annual reports, documentation on the Mary Lue Hinds Award, and correspondence. The documents also provide information about fund-raising events, especially the Person’s Day Breakfast: promotional documentation, programs, photographs and speeches of guest speakers.

The records in this fonds attest to the educational mission of LEAF Sudbury and their interventions. There are records on the Book Project, reports, minutes and other related documentation on LEAF Sudbury’s profile in the community. The fonds also consists of general documentation, such as publications, bulletins and legal reports, which provide information about the activities of LEAF across Canada and at its local branches.

This fonds is arranged into four series: I: Constitutive and Administrative records; II: Fund Raising; III: Education projects; and IV: Documentation.

The Finnish National Society of Sudbury fonds attests to the role of the Finnish National Society of Sudbury, at the regional and national level, in preserving the Finnish culture and also to their role in helping with immigrant adjustment. The records not only document the social and cultural activities sponsored by the group between 1930 and 1980, but also the administrative part of its existence.

The fonds consists of incorporating documents such as the original charter of the Society, and the 1932 letter Patent for the Loyal Finns of Canada; membership records, minutes, financial records, correspondence, newsletters, plays and photographs. It also contains newspaper clippings and leaflets.

The Music Department fonds, RG 10-2, is arranged and described at the series level, with an accompanying file list. The fonds consists of two series: Jack Arthur files (RG 10-2-1) and Subject Files (RG 10-2-2).

Textual records in the fonds consist of correspondence, reports, schedules, minutes, and publicity material related to the Music Department and Grandstand show staff, musicians, performers and other entertainers, competition contestants, and CNE visitors. Graphic and printed materials include photographs of dancers, performer headshots, and other events coordinated by the Music Department, as well as sheet music from the 1953 Grandstand show.

Few documents exist for the years 1960, 1962, 1973, and 1981. No records exist for the years 1954 to 1956, 1959, and 1963 to 1972.
