This series contains records concerning the involvement of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the London diocese with the field of education in London, Ontario. This includes the Sisters’ time as students, teachers, principals, and administrators. The educational institutes are Catholic elementary schools and high schools, choir schools, the London Roman Catholic Separate School Board, post-secondary schools, and the Divine Word (the International Centre of Religious Education operated by the London diocese). One of the post-secondary institutions, London Teachers College, was originally named London Normal School. The material in this series consists of correspondence, pamphlets, photographs, news clippings, newsletters, board minutes, histories, yearbooks, and manuals. The correspondence is primarily concerned with administrative matters, the employment of Sisters, and arranging events. Notable topics within these records include teaching practices, anniversary events, Canada’s centennial, and G. Campbell Trowsdale’s study “An Alternative Elementary School in the Performing Arts: The St. Mary’s Choir and Orchestra Program.”

There is one audio cassette of Sister Mary Margaret Childs, director of the senior choir, talking about her memories of the program, and one vinyl plaque presented to Sisters Mary Margaret Childs and Maureen Dalton from a group of alumni.

This fonds contains records produced during the time the Sisters administered and worked at Mount St. Joseph Centre in Hamilton. It also consists of records which were produced by the Woodview Children’s Centre and Cool School in Burlington and Hamilton. These institutions grew out of Mount St. Joseph Centre after it ceased its functions. The records that encompass this collection are of historical importance because they offer a snapshot of special needs education during the latter half of the twentieth century. The fonds consists of bylaws and policies, correspondence, proposals and reports, a scrapbook, meeting minutes, financial records, newspaper clippings, photographs, publications, invitations, addresses, and legal documents.

There is also information about how the purpose of Fontbonne Hall changed throughout its time in operation.

This series concerns the Sisters of St. Joseph’s involvement in education in Ontario. The records are focused on school boards, associations, educational policies and regulations, and the changes to Catholic education. The types of records included in this series are minutes, bulletins, newsletters, magazines, booklets, clippings, photographs, correspondence, annual reports, and event programs. The major educational organizations these records deal with include the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association, the Ontario Separate School Trustees Association, the Waterloo Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board, the Huron Perth Separate School Board, the Separate School Board of London, and the Association of Catholic High School Boards of Ontario. Much of the material concerns changes to education and Catholic education in Canada, and many publications on the topic are included. Some of the publications were created by the Sisters, such as The Changing face of Catholic Education in London 1858-1963, a study for the Separate School Board of London, Ontario. Sister Patricia Hogan was the Religious Co-Ordinator for the magazine Spiritual Development and several issues of this magazine and clippings of articles written by her are present. Sister Alice Marie McDonald and Sister M. Stanislaus McKinnon were involved with the Provincial Committee on Aims and Objectives of Education in the Schools of Ontario which created the Hall-Dennis Report. Photographs of Sister Alice Marie McDonald and members of the committee working on said report are present along with a summary of the report from the view of Catholic schools.

There are also minutes from the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph Advisory Board, a committee within the community that oversaw the involvement of Sisters in education. This included institutes operated by the Sisters and those where the Sisters were employed. The minutes include discussions of contracts, school policies, reports from teachers’ meetings, and Christian education. Amongst the minutes are agendas, correspondence with the advisory board, bulletins, and statistics of Sisters working in schools.

Additionally, there is material focused on the history of the Sisters’ involvement in education and Catholic education in Canada. There is correspondence concerning the establishment of Huron Perth Separate School Board Archives and histories of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Goderich, Kingsbridge, St. Mary’s Town, Seaforth, Zurich, and Kinkora, Ontario. Dr. Elizabeth Smyth studied women religious who taught in Canada and there is correspondence about her research with the Sisters. There are various publications by Dr. Elizabeth Smyth, including her thesis, The Lessons of Religion and Science: The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph and St. Joseph’s Academy, Toronto 1854-1911.

Graeme Mount fonds

The Graeme Mount fonds attests to Mount’s different activities and achievements as a professor in the Laurentian University history department, as a researcher, and as a member of the Laurentian Unviersity community. Many files concern his teaching activities: notes and texts for courses taught, field trips with students and colleagues, and travel logs are amongst the many teaching and research activities that are well documented. The fonds also contains many photographs taken on his travels. These include photos of a trip to South Korea in 1999 with Laurentian faculty members, as well as photos taken in Chile and published in one of his books. Finally the fonds contains many research notes including copies of Consulate correspondence (originally created 1910-1935) from the Department of State; files concerning the Ku Klux Klan; records from the closure of the Consular Agency in Sudbury as well as American Tourism via Sault Ste. Marie, World War I, economic matters and prohibition in the 1920's. Copies of archives from Monaco dating from 1838-1868 are also included.

Most of Mount’s articles, papers, and reports on Latin America’s politics are also contained in the fonds. Recent acquisitions include documents on the history of Northern Ontario, and 6 photographs recording when a CPR train derailed and freight cars fell in the Wanapitae River in 2013.

The collection consists of correspondence, copies of articles on Shakespeare Township, booklets from telephone companies, a publication on the geology of Dunlop-Shakespeare Area, copies of school reports (originally created 1914-1963), copies of 1933-1956 reports on Shakespeare Gold mine and uranium mines, and personnel accounts of Shakespeare Township activities. Railway, mining, and timber activities, and a teacher recollection are among the handwritten accounts.

Jennifer Keck fonds

The Jennifer Keck fonds attests to her professional and public involvement in matters related to social justice. Her training and employment in social work and commitment to improving the lives of others is reflected in her scholarly works and records that show her community involvement. The documents illustrate her exploration of topics such as labour, welfare, Indigenous issues, community development and organizing, as well as poverty, employment, and issues related to women and families. These interests are reflected in the records created through projects that she undertook as an academic, such as the multifaceted Women at INCO project. The fonds indicates that she addressed these same issues in her community activism, through her involvement in Better Beginnings, Better Futures, Sudbury Women's Centre, Myths and Mirrors Community Arts, Circles of Strength: Sudbury Breast Cancer Support Group, and through frequent contributions to local media. Her work as a researcher for the Anti-Mercury Ojibwa Group and for her own publications on government job creation initiatives, labour and community issues is also represented in textual form.

These records, generated during Dr. Keck's professional career, also reveal her personal interests and goals. The speeches, presentations and workshops that are documented in the fonds reflect her struggle with cancer, her commitment to the underprivileged and her strong affiliation with feminist theory and practice.

The fonds comprises course and teaching materials, documentation, professional correspondence, administrative materials, and items that attest to Dr. Keck's scholarly output, such as presentations, publications and workshops. The fonds also contains photographs, physical objects and audio and videocassettes.

The majority of the documents contained in this fonds were created during Dr. Keck's time as a professor in the School of Social Work, Laurentian University. The fonds also comprises a comprehensive body of textual, audiovisual and photographic material on the Women at INCO project, documentation of her PhD thesis, taped interviews and transcripts with the working poor, and material related to her employment as a field research coordinator with the Anti-Mercury Ojibwa Group.

The book of correspondence from Jean Étienne Fournier consists almost exclusively of his business correspondence. This correspondence highlights activities that took place in the early years in Sudbury. The 746 pages of correspondence also provide insight to the workings of a general store in terms of purchasing and accounts receivable. The numerous letters in the book refer to his role as Postmaster, Warehouse Manager, and Insurance Agent. Certain facts and events with regard to the School Board and individual schools are mentioned.

Le fonds d’archives composé d’un dossier de la Société Amicale Trillium, et d’un dossier de recherche, témoigne de l’implication de Guy Gaudreau dans la vie culturelle francophone de Sudbury et de ses activités et méthodologies d’enseignement. En effet, le dossier de recherche est composé des documents de recherche et des travaux des étudiants du cours sur l’histoire du Nord de l’Ontario. Lors de ce cours, Guy Gaudreau avait soumis comme projet aux étudiants, une recherche ayant pour but la publication d’un livre sur l’histoire de l’Association des étudiants francophones (AEF) de l’université Laurentienne. Ainsi on retrouve des dossiers composés de notes de recherche, transcriptions d’entrevues avec des acteurs-clés lors de la création de l’association étudiante, des originaux et copies de documents de l’AEF, ainsi que les travaux des étudiants. Les principaux thèmes traités sont : la constitution de l’AEF, le budget, les activités culturelles ainsi que les raisons de la création d’une association francophone et la réception faite à cette association sur le campus. Le dossier de La Société Amicale Trillium contient des demandes de subventions et états financiers de cette société, qui avait comme objectif, un festival du film.

Le fonds Association francophone pour le savoir-Sudbury (Acfas-Sudbury) témoigne des différentes activités et réalisations de l'association depuis ses débuts. Les ressources financières et administratives sont documentées, ainsi on y retrouve des procès-verbaux, des rapports et de la correspondance. On y retrouve aussi des documents de certaines activités organisées avant l'établissement officiel de l'Acfas-Sudbury. Dans le cadre des nombreuses activités de l'Acfas, qui sont documentées, la majeure partie des dossiers traitent de l'organisation de la Journée du savoir et des divers colloques. Mentionnons des affiches et des programmes. Le fonds d'archives témoigne des 30 ans de l'Acfas dans la région, ceci avec un colloque en 1975. Notons aussi qu'il y a des photographies qui illustrent la Journée du savoir et les conférenciers.

Two publications of The Conservationist and a newsletter of the Sudbury and District Chamber of Commerce are also included.

The Joan Mount fonds consists of documents relating to her administrative roles at Laurentian University as well as her involvement in the Faculty Association. Files document the different aspects of her role as Dean and give insights on the decision making at the administrative level of the institution. The fonds contains files on Laurentian University sports teams as well as the structure of the administration, strategic planning, and development of programs. Files documenting her publications are also included in the fonds.

The Huntington University fonds consists mainly of correspondence, minutes, documentation, publications, yearbooks and photographs. The records document the administration of Huntington University. Not all functions performed at the University are documented and the records focus on the first 15 years of administration at Huntington. For instance, there are no records from the academic programs. Records created and used by the Board of Regents along with Silas Huntington records can be found in the fonds. Many records attest to the different roles performed by Rev. Dr. Earl Lautenslager as Chairman of the Northern Ontario University Association (NOUA), his administration of Huntington University as the first President and his ministry at St. Andrew's United Church. The records of the President/Principal's office are the most abundant. The records show the diversity of the work the President/Principal completed at the University, from corresponding with various individuals to planning the convocations. Information about student life at Huntington is well documented through the residence handbooks, student newsletters and yearbooks. A vast collection of photographs of the students also help provide a visual of their activities on campus. Other photographs can be found that depict the beginnings of Huntington on the Laurentian University campus and individuals such as the Board of Regents, faculty and staff. Documentation can be found on the history of Huntington and the United Church, along with various pieces of literature.
