Carson Piper collection

The Carson Piper collection consists of both original and published material pertaining to a broad expanse of the history of Northwestern Ontario, concentrating primarily on early fur trading and settlement activities. It is arranged into 12 series by record type. The first and eleventh series contain material relating to Mr. Piper's activities as president and member of the Thunder Bay Historical Society. Most of the rest of the collection contains pamphlets, articles and reports published between 1763 and 1951.

The Ross Munro Matthews fonds consists of the unpublished personal memoirs of Ross Munro Matthews, entitled "Oft in the Stilly Night", written for his family. Recounts his growing up in early Thunder Bay, an anecdotal description of Walpole Roland, and accounts of cottage days on Silver Islet, the Cross family, the McKirdys of Nipigon, J.T. Emmerson of Port Arthur, Martha Dickinson (the first female City Clerk in Canada), I.L. Matthews, Harwood Matthews, the Munro family, Morson S. Fotheringham and Ross Matthews himself. Includes family tree. This is particularly good on descriptions of familial relationships and childhood in early Thunder Bay.

The papers are concerned primarily with Wilson's agricultural pursuits and include diaries, ledgers, invoices and receipts along with personal legal papers. His comments published in various newspapers, contained in series 6, form an excellent description of rural Thunder Bay in this period. The diaries are a good source for the study of local climatic change.

The Jessie C. Crawford fonds contains notes taken by Miss Baker during her kindergarten assistants' course and during her one year at the Toronto Normal School which were used as the basis for teaching at Port Arthur's first kindergarten at Cornwall School in 1908. The method followed was that of "Montessori", the Italian teacher, and was designed to develop specific skills of hand and mind. Books are hardbound and handwritten.

The E.A. Carpenter fonds consists of a diary which he used to keep daily records of his activities during the year 1894. This handwritten account contains mostly business details such as settling of accounts, hiring workers, hauling and cutting wood, rails and ties and a description of his travels to various work sites. Also contains notes of his social and family activities and of local events of importance. Contains references to many of Fort William's notables such as the McKellars, J.T. Horne, Mr. McLaurin, and George A. Graham.

The Herman Frederick Eberts fonds consists of reports and agreements relating to mining investments made by H.F. Eberts, primarily in Northern Ontario, including Marks Township, Steep Rock Lake, Black Bay, Rainy River, Loon Lake and Tache, mostly in the 1890s. Consists of letters written to Eberts by various contacts in Canada reporting on the sites and conditions of mines, assayers' reports, and formal agreements and titles to various properties. Also included is a report on pulpwood stands and the prospects for constructing a pulp mill in the Chapleau, Chester and Georgian Bay area, ca. 1900.
