Also includes nomination forms entitled “Combat Action Insignia Proforma” for those Canadian Forces personnel who were involved in intense fighting in Afghanistan. There are two series:

Fonds consists of 2nd Canadian Corps intelligence summaries from the Second World War dated 1944-1945. Includes descriptions of enemy dispositions, weapons and Allied operational progress. A number of sketch drawings of German tanks, grenades and other weaponry are present. Also includes many tracer maps which detail various Allied and enemy positions in Northwest Europe.

Fonds consists of a photocopy of the war diary of the Canadian Radar Detachment on Loan to Australian Military Forces. It was compiled by Officer Commanding Canadian Radar Detachment Major H.F. Graham from correspondence and documents filed with the Directorate of Armament Development (Radar) at National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa and from personal diaries. The diary gives a daily breakdown of the unit’s activities and news during 15 June 1944-14 February 1946 non-inclusively. The diary also includes a list of members of the unit who received decorations during that period.

Part of United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda fonds

Series consists of documentation books documenting the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) during 1993-1994. Includes the “Dual Status Documentation Books” consisting of 16 books and 32 tabs, and the “United Nations Documentation Books” consisting of 17 books and 40 tabs. Both groups of books have an index and a chronological listing of documents, and each file includes photocopied pages from the Indexes. The documentation includes faxes, agreements, briefing notes, instructions, memos, messages, reports, press releases, rules of engagements, statements and a variety of other documents. The UN documentation books also includes transcripts of radio broadcasts. In addition, there are also General Dallaire’s Documentation Books consisting of a diary and a notebook and detailing his activities during July 1993 to May 1994.

Part of United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda fonds

Series consists of material that duplicates some of the material in Series 1 and documents the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR) during the early 1990s. It consists of a wide variety of documents, including faxes, agreements, briefing notes, instructions, memos, messages, various kinds of reports, press releases, rules of engagements, statements, radio broadcasts, and Dallaire’s diary and notebook. The series is divided up into the following sub-groups:

  1. JNT Files (JNT 3901-8326)
  2. MIS Files (MIS 1-6402)
  3. PER files (PER 1-25)
  4. UND Files (UND 2668-7877)
    The documents in each group are arranged in numerical order. The JNT and MIS files include yellow sheets indicating the material that is Classified. However, these documents are missing and are not included in the series. The UND files includes Classified material which has been severed and placed in Box 12. There is also a 1999 report by the Secretary-General entitled “Srebrenica Report”, which includes an assessment on the events dating from the establishment of the safe area of Srebrenica on 16 April 1993 until 15 December 1995.

Also includes 2 volumes of personnel information sheets of the participants in the project, an information kit in French, draft issue of instructions and a draft issue entitled “Operation Memoria The Repatriation of Canada’s Unknown Soldier 23-28 May 2000.” There are also four videocassettes regarding Operation Memoria and the ceremony of 28 May 2000.

Collection consists of research material on the Avro Arrow and the FHE 400 Hydrofoil Ship. Includes papers regarding the escape system and the pilots’ cockpit in the Avro aircraft in the late 1950s, as well as files on human engineering and problems associated with low speed low level air navigation in the early 1960s. There are also two files dealing with hydrofoils and regarding the human engineering of Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) ships during 1962-1963 and including a 1965 design report for the RCN.

Donald C. Bowie fonds

Fonds consists of correspondence with the former director of the Directorate of History and Heritage, W.A.B. Douglas, re Donald C. Bowie’s personal papers. In these letters the two discuss Bowie’s personal account which he published as, “Captive Surgeon in Hong Kong: The Story of the British Military Hospital, Hong Kong, 1942-1945” and his plans for his personal papers. Please note that the fonds does not include a copy of the personal account.

Lionel Austen-Leigh fonds

Fonds consists of transcriptions of letters and copies of photographs sent home by Lionel Austen-Leigh from his time on HMSC CC-1. The letters date from the beginning of Austen-Leigh’s time on HMSC CC-1 in 1914 to his discharge in 1915. There are two black and white photographs included with the letters. One photograph is of the submarine CC-1. The other photograph is of the submarine’s crew. Finally there is a photocopy of one of the original letters which contains a hand-drawn image of the submarine.

John Norman Buchan fonds

Fonds consists of John Buchan (Lord Tweedsmuir)’s personal account of the beginning of the Sicily campaign, specifically the battle of Assoro. The record begins in June 1943 when Buchan was informed that he was second-in-command of the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment of the Canadian Army. The record then follows Buchan and the regiment as they begin the Sicily campaign. The record ends on 23 July 1943 at the end of the battle of Assoro. Buchan included the accounts of Farley Mowat and Angus B. Duffy in his narrative to flesh out his narrative on the campaign. Also includes a newspaper clipping dated 1989 on the Sicilian campaign and the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment.

Fonds consists of 1 published volume regarding the early volunteer militia of Brant County, Ontario during 1856- 1866. Includes information on the roots of the militia in Brant County; significant experiences of the militia, including the Fenian invasion of 1866; descriptions of the units of service, including rifle, infantry, truck and railway companies; and the creation of the 38th Brant Battalion of Infantry. Also includes illustrations and personal recollections of former reserves. Fonds provides officer lists of companies within the county including those awarded medals, militia acts, general orders, memoranda, weapons, and uniforms at this time. There is also a photocopy of the July 1944 issue of the "Brantford Skyline". The issue was published by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) No. 5 Service Flying Training School.
