Series mostly consists of the “Technological Decision-Making in the Canadian Navy: 1953-1965” by Sturton Mathwin. Davis, which is a document consisting of seven sections, and various drafts of it. The different sections of the manuscript include: biographical notes; the nuclear-submarine progression: from nuclear repulsion to nuclear submarines to conventional submarines; Royal Canadian Navy technical service on the eve of unification: reorganization and restriction; the general purpose frigate: new approaches to design and development; the DDH 280: inception and approval of a new concept; naval overseeing, trials, acceptance and commissioning; and concluding reflections: thoughts of achievement and failure. The series also consists of manuscripts on defence colleges, some biographical and autobiographical information about Sturton Mathwin Davis and his correspondence with others.

Includes articles, book reviews, lecture texts and book chapters, which were published in a variety of peacekeeping journals, magazines, newspapers and books. Subjects covered include the United Nations generally, and specifically in relation to international relations, the Cold War and disarmament, and UN peacekeeping in general as well as specific peacekeeping operations. The series also contains two books by Alan James. Sovereign Statehood: The Basis of International Society, was published in 1986 as part of the Key Concepts in International Relations Series, and Britain and the Congo Crisis: 1960-1963 was published in 1996.

Series consists of several files containing forms, messages and correspondence between chart depots at various locations in the world and the Hydrographic Services Office in Halifax, N.S. during the Second World War to 1947. Includes files of the Hydrographic and Map Services Branch of the Canadian government and the Hydrographer, Naval Service Headquarters (NSHQ), Ottawa (formerly the Staff Officer, Navigator), as well as the British Admiralty’s the Hydrographer and Chief Superintendent. There are also files of: the Naval Secretary, Ottawa; the Commanding Officer Atlantic Coast; the Commodore Halifax and Commander of Dockyard (formerly the Naval Officer in Charge Halifax); and the Naval Officer in Charge and Naval Control Service Officer for Montreal, Saint John and Sydney, NS. Includes numerous requests for charts and other hydrographic publications, as well as various documents describing the shipping, receiving and issuing of charts to various ships and other hydrographic offices. There is also personal correspondence of the Commander of the Halifax Chart and Chronometer Depot, which describe personal inquiries and requests to the office. Standards on magnetic compasses, buoys and other nautical equipment are also included as well as numerous memoranda describing all administrative functions of the depot. The files are arranged in alpha-numerical order by reference number. Files with no reference number are filed in alphabetical order by title at the end of the series.

The content of the documentation varies from personal correspondence, discussion of the submissions and presentations, opinions from various sources (historical, unit level, on the overall restructuring or particular aspects, from the general public, specialists, cadets, and regular versus reserves), funding issues, and many statistics on almost all aspects. Each document that was collected as a part of the commission’s work for consideration should have a correspondence document summary sheet.
