Sub-series consists of copies of Monitor, a community newsletter “for staff and friends of TGH.” Monitor was published monthly 1968-1982, then quarterly 1983-1989. Files are incomplete, especially for 1968-1973.

Series consists of bound minutes of the Joint Hospital/ University Relations Committee.

Sub-series consists of copies of Generally Speaking, a weekly newsletter for TGH staff, published June 4, 1982 to March 31, 1989. Generally Speaking was succeeded by The Toronto Hospital staff newsletter, Caring.

The newsletter contains news and announcements, including staff appointments and retirements; special events; changes to Hospital services and facilities, obituaries etc.

Series consists of admission registers kept by the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, April 1982-December 1989; personal and professional papers of TGH neurosurgeons 1934-1979; various materials relating to the opening of the new TGH neurosurgical unit, November 1958; correspondence and photographs relating to TGH chief neurosurgical residents 1931-1984; various papers of Dr. T.P. Morley, Head of the TGH Division of Neurosurgery 1962-1979; and miscellaneous records, including photographs of Jessie Young from 1998.

Sub-series consists of admission registers kept by the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, April 1982-December 1989. Registers include patient names, dates of admission to TGH and to the Neurosurgical ICU, address, attending doctors’ names, patients’ date of birth and OHIP number, diagnosis, TGH history number, date of discharge or death and destination at discharge.

Series consists of correspondence and position papers regarding Princess Margaret Hospital’s relocation and the merger between Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital. The material related to the Princess Margaret Hospital relocation was compiled while Dr. Cowan was Chair of the Oncology Coordinating Council at the University of Toronto. The material related to the TGH-TWH merger is from Dr. Cowan’s time as Head of the Department of Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center. Opinions on the proposed merger had been requested of the Chairs of Clinical Departments in the Faculty of Medicine by the Dean of Medicine, University of Toronto in 1985. Each head of a hospital’s Department of Medicine were sent copies.

Dr. Cowan organized these files with both names and numbers. File titles retain Dr. Cowan’s original titles and his file numbers are included at the end of the file titles in brackets. Arrangement is according to Dr. Cowan’s original numbering. There were two different files numbered 23. Files 1-21 and 37 were not donated to the Archives.

Series consists of bound minutes from the Medical Advisory Board/Committee of the Toronto General Hospital, which were kept in the office of the Department of Medical-Legal Affairs of The Toronto Hospital after the merger between the Toronto Western and Toronto General Hospitals.

Minutes of the Medical Advisory Board from its inception in 1876 to 1915 have not been transferred to the Archives and are considered missing.

Series consists of the Department’s annual reports for the years 1985-1986 and 1986-1987, detailing the Department’s clinical and research activities.

Sub-series consists of annual reports prepared and published by the Board of Trustees. Reports contain such information as lists of administrative and medical staff; statistics and/or departmental reports illustrating major hospital functions, services and activities; summary reports by the chairman of the Board of Trustees, the hospital’s chief executive officer, and the Director of the TGH School of Nursing; annual financial statements outlining the hospital’s revenues and expenses; photographs and illustrations depicting hospital buildings, facilities, services and staff.

From ca. 1920-1926 the TGH annual report was published in the form of a report by the Superintendent entitled “For the Common Good” (see files TG 2.1.4 to TG 2.1.6). From ca. 1926-1951 no annual report was published by the TGH.

File 1.2.8 contains TGH annual reports for the years 1905-1908 which were restored and bound together in November, 1988.

Series consists of annual lists of appointments to the TGH medical staff; TGH annual reports; minutes of meetings of the Board and its subcommittees; correspondence; lists of members of the Board; materials relating to special events and ceremonies at the TGH; legislative acts and by-laws pertaining to the TGH; visitors registers; and documents pertaining to the management of property owned by and/ or endowed to the TGH. Series consists of various materials created and maintained by the Department of Nutrition Services including a certificate of completion from the pupil dietitian course (1918), newsletters, Christmas dinner menus, course outlines from the Dietetic Internship Program, and programs from graduation and retirement dinners.

Series consists of bound minutes and documents accumulated by the Office of the President. Much of the material relates to the Toronto General Hospital. File 9.1.4 includes a banking by-law from October 16, 1989.
