Department of Nutrition ServicesSeries consists of Departmental financial records including account statements and journals, a small and miscellaneous sample of patient records including a comprehensive list of patients treated by the Department June 1932-May 1933, and records relating to the Department’s involvement in the radiological examination and identification of the remains of victims of the Noronic disaster in September 1949.

Series consists of instructions to patients for performing rehabilitative exercises; sample blank forms used by the Department in testing patients for diagnostic purposes and in documenting patients’ treatments; blank forms and instruction sheets used in documenting and evaluating the employment activities of Department personnel; and miscellaneous materials (chiefly sample blank forms) used in conducting the daily business of the Department.

Department of Rehabilitation and Physical MedicineSeries consists of admission registers kept by the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, April 1982-December 1989; personal and professional papers of TGH neurosurgeons 1934-1979; various materials relating to the opening of the new TGH neurosurgical unit, November 1958; correspondence and photographs relating to TGH chief neurosurgical residents 1931-1984; various papers of Dr. T.P. Morley, Head of the TGH Division of Neurosurgery 1962-1979; and miscellaneous records, including photographs of Jessie Young from 1998.

Sub-series consists of files relating to donations and bequests created and maintained by the Office of the Superintendent/Executive Director/President. All files were labelled “Finance Dir.-Donations & Bequests” and “2-B”. The files were not in any particular order, though at some point they may have been arranged alphabetically. No attempt has been made to reconstitute original order. File 2.31.35 includes copies of the last will and testaments of Agnes and Jane Shields of the City of Toronto.
File 22.5.1 contains correspondence, reports, proposals etc., created, received and collected 1965-1983 by Dr. T.P. Morley in his capacity as TGH Neurosurgeon-in-Chief (1962-1979) and thereafter concerning long-term planning and development of the TGH Division of Neurosurgery and the proposed Playfair Neurosciences Unit (established 1978 at the Toronto Western Hospital). File 22.5.2 contains a memorandum Dr. Morley prepared for his private information concerning his involvement in the TGH Task Force on Nursing 1969, and related developments in the administration of the TGH Nursing Department. File 22.5.3 contains copies of annual reports (1972/1973 to 1978/1979) of the University of Toronto Division of Neurosurgery, prepared by Dr. Morley in his capacity as Chairman of the Division. File 22.5.4 includes a memorandum Dr. Morley created for his private information concerning a meeting (November 29, 1968) of the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine Council at which was discussed the issue of “democratic Faculty representation on high levels of university government…[and on the] Borden Committee…[a standing committee of the Board of Governors of the University of Toronto charged with] deciding the future structure and fate of the medical school”.
Morley, T. P. (Thomas P.)Sub-series consists of various materials relating to the publication of Dr. W.G. Cosbie’s history of the TGH: The Toronto General Hospital 1819-1965: A Chronicle Toronto: MacMillan, 1975. Dr. Cosbie contracted with the TGH Board of Trustees, through the Office of the President, to research and write the history. The Office of the President managed the editing and publication process. Copyright in the work belongs to the Toronto General Hospital.
Files 2.29.1 to 2.29.3 contain correspondence with Dr. Cosbie, editors, publishers’ representatives and others. Materials include a contractual agreement with MacMillan of Canada Ltd., reports by various editorial readers, and promotional materials.
File 2.29.4 contains editorial corrections made by Dr. Cosbie [1974?]. File 2.29.5 contains research notes and copies of various documents used by Dr. Cosbie. Files 2.29.6 to 2.29.9 contain the corrected typescript delivered by Dr. Cosbie to the Office of the President in November 1972.

Toronto General Hospital. Emergency Department CommitteeSub-series consists of minutes of monthly meetings of the Executive Committee of the TGH Board of Trustees December 1917-May 1946. Minutes principally contain monthly Hospital financial account records, specifically itemized lists of cheques issued to cover Hospital expenses, including pay roll, medical supplies and drugs, and food.
Minutes for November 1926-December 1927 and for February 1930-September 1932 are missing.
Toronto General Hospital. Board of TrusteesSub-series consists of the Committee’s final report, submitted to the Medical Advisory Board January 4, 1950, and a memorandum summarizing the Committee’s findings submitted by the Medical Advisory Board to the TGH Board of Trustees.
Toronto General Hospital. Fact-Finding Committee re: Nursing ShortageSeries consists of records created and collected by the TGH Finance Department and predecessor bodies, and by individual executive officers responsible for maintaining the general financial records of the TGH. Records include financial statements, ledgers, accounts payable records, comparative expense analyses, financial and statistical returns, correspondence as well as deeds and endowments.

Sub-series consists of account statements 1926-1951 and account journals July 1954-December 1955. Account statements include correspondence, invoices, receipts, purchase orders, working papers and calculations relating to the purchase of equipment, materials and supplies for clinical, research and teaching purposes in the TGH Department of Radiology. Account journals consist of itemized accounts of Departmental income and expenses. File 6.1.6 contains correspondence, invoices, receipts, and purchase orders relating to equipment purchased from Picker X-Ray of Canada Ltd. 1942-1951. File 6.1.7 contains financial statements summarizing expenditures for equipment purchased from various suppliers 1937-1944.
Toronto General Hospital. Department of RadiologySub-series consists of annual (1877-1891; 1944-1952) and monthly (January 1945-May 1947; December 1945, 1946, 1947; January-November 1964) financial statements summarizing the general expenses and revenues of the TGH.
Similar material in the form of annual reports of TGH revenues and expenses by external auditors (Clarkson, Gordon & Co., Chartered Accountants) ifound in sub-series TG 2.2 ff. (Superintendent’s Correspondence and General Administration files, 1928 ff.).
Files 32.1.1 to 32.1.15 each contain a statement of revenue account sheet and balance sheet. Files 32.1.16 to 32.1.53 each contain eight statements: General Expense and Revenue; Operating Expenses; Revenue and Expense Departmentally; Details of Operating Revenue; Details of Operating Expenses; Cost of Meals (Food Only); Details of Food Consumed; Balance Sheet. Files 32.1.54 to 32.1.64 each contain seven statements: Statement of Revenue and Expense; Statistical Details; Analysis of Revenue; Analysis of Expense; Statement of Revenue; Expenses (Department of Diagnostic Radiology); and Balance Sheet.
Files 32.1.16 to 32.1.29 each include a monthly report re: Hospital finances prepared by the Superintendent for the Board of Trustees. Files 32.1.34 to 32.1.36 and 32.1.38 to 32.1.42 each contain a summary of accounts payable report.
Files occasionally contain agendas for monthly meetings of the TGH Board of Trustees at which the financial statements were presented and ratified.
Statements for August 1946, December 1964 and the year ending December 31, 1947 are missing.
Toronto General Hospital. Finance DepartmentSub-series consists of copies of Generally Speaking, a weekly newsletter for TGH staff, published June 4, 1982 to March 31, 1989. Generally Speaking was succeeded by The Toronto Hospital staff newsletter, Caring.
The newsletter contains news and announcements, including staff appointments and retirements; special events; changes to Hospital services and facilities, obituaries etc.
Toronto General Hospital. Public Relations DepartmentSub-series consists of copies of annual financial returns for 1946 to1951 and annual statistical returns for the years 1928-1952 for the Toronto General Hospital and the Wellesley Division of the Toronto General Hospital. These returns were sent to the Department of Health of the Province of Ontario. The financial return for 1952 is missing and the statistical return for 1951 is missing. Financial returns contain five statements: Statement of Departmental Expense; Balance Sheet; Revenue and Expense Statement; Costing Schedules; Statement of Operating Revenue. Statistical returns contain statistics on the hospital such as the number of beds, number of patients, number of hospital staff and number of patient deaths.
