Acts and By-Laws

Sub-series consists of legislative bills and acts pertaining to the Toronto General Hospital, and by-laws adopted by the TGH Board of trustees and sanctioned by the Provincial Lieutenant-Governor in Council.

Administrative records

Sub-series consists of minutes of clinic staff meetings, policy statements and medical notes issued by clinic administrators for the direction of staff in providing treatment and complying with Ontario Department of Health regulations and procedures concerning the reporting and treatment of venereal disease cases, correspondence of the Director of the Clinic, and statistics compiled by the Clinic documenting the volume and type of treatment provided.

Annual Reports

Sub-series consists of annual reports prepared and published by the Board of Trustees. Reports contain such information as lists of administrative and medical staff; statistics and/or departmental reports illustrating major hospital functions, services and activities; summary reports by the chairman of the Board of Trustees, the hospital’s chief executive officer, and the Director of the TGH School of Nursing; annual financial statements outlining the hospital’s revenues and expenses; photographs and illustrations depicting hospital buildings, facilities, services and staff.

From ca. 1920-1926 the TGH annual report was published in the form of a report by the Superintendent entitled “For the Common Good” (see files TG 2.1.4 to TG 2.1.6). From ca. 1926-1951 no annual report was published by the TGH.

File 1.2.8 contains TGH annual reports for the years 1905-1908 which were restored and bound together in November, 1988.

Applications for Internships

Sub-series consists of applications for positions on the intern staff, including academic transcripts, photographs, and personal and professional letters of reference.

Chief Neurosurgical Residents

Sub-series consists of individual photographs of TGH Chief Neurosurgical Residents 1932-[198?]; correspondence between the former Residents and Dr. T.P. Morley 1980-1984, chiefly concerning the photographs; lists of TGH neurosurgical residents 1931-1980; and humorous verses composed for the Residents’ annual Christmas skits [195?]-1960.

Correspondence

Sub-series consists of correspondence to and from members of the Board of Trustees, legal counsel for the Trustees, and the Board Secretary. The greatest part of the materials contained in this Sub-series is correspondence from the chairman of the Board with subscribers to the TGH Building fund 1918-1934, including lists of subscribers and their commitments, letters of acknowledgment, receipts, subscription cards and invoices.

Correspondence with Medical Advisory Board

Sub-series consists of correspondence between the Assistant Superintendent, Medical and the Medical Advisory Board concerning the medical management of the Hospital.

Dr. T.P. Morley papers

File 22.5.1 contains correspondence, reports, proposals etc., created, received and collected 1965-1983 by Dr. T.P. Morley in his capacity as TGH Neurosurgeon-in-Chief (1962-1979) and thereafter concerning long-term planning and development of the TGH Division of Neurosurgery and the proposed Playfair Neurosciences Unit (established 1978 at the Toronto Western Hospital). File 22.5.2 contains a memorandum Dr. Morley prepared for his private information concerning his involvement in the TGH Task Force on Nursing 1969, and related developments in the administration of the TGH Nursing Department. File 22.5.3 contains copies of annual reports (1972/1973 to 1978/1979) of the University of Toronto Division of Neurosurgery, prepared by Dr. Morley in his capacity as Chairman of the Division. File 22.5.4 includes a memorandum Dr. Morley created for his private information concerning a meeting (November 29, 1968) of the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine Council at which was discussed the issue of “democratic Faculty representation on high levels of university government…[and on the] Borden Committee…[a standing committee of the Board of Governors of the University of Toronto charged with] deciding the future structure and fate of the medical school”.

Morley, T. P. (Thomas P.)

Dr. W.G. Cosbie Papers 1965-1975

Sub-series consists of various materials relating to the publication of Dr. W.G. Cosbie’s history of the TGH: The Toronto General Hospital 1819-1965: A Chronicle Toronto: MacMillan, 1975. Dr. Cosbie contracted with the TGH Board of Trustees, through the Office of the President, to research and write the history. The Office of the President managed the editing and publication process. Copyright in the work belongs to the Toronto General Hospital.

Files 2.29.1 to 2.29.3 contain correspondence with Dr. Cosbie, editors, publishers’ representatives and others. Materials include a contractual agreement with MacMillan of Canada Ltd., reports by various editorial readers, and promotional materials.

File 2.29.4 contains editorial corrections made by Dr. Cosbie [1974?]. File 2.29.5 contains research notes and copies of various documents used by Dr. Cosbie. Files 2.29.6 to 2.29.9 contain the corrected typescript delivered by Dr. Cosbie to the Office of the President in November 1972.

Emergency Department Committee records

Sub-series consists of minutes of meetings and related correspondence, reports and other materials distributed and considered at meetings.

Executive Committee records

Sub-series consists of minutes of monthly meetings of the Executive Committee of the TGH Board of Trustees December 1917-May 1946. Minutes principally contain monthly Hospital financial account records, specifically itemized lists of cheques issued to cover Hospital expenses, including pay roll, medical supplies and drugs, and food.

Minutes for November 1926-December 1927 and for February 1930-September 1932 are missing.

Fact-Finding Committee re: Nursing Shortage records

Sub-series consists of the Committee’s final report, submitted to the Medical Advisory Board January 4, 1950, and a memorandum summarizing the Committee’s findings submitted by the Medical Advisory Board to the TGH Board of Trustees.

Generally Speaking

Sub-series consists of copies of Generally Speaking, a weekly newsletter for TGH staff, published June 4, 1982 to March 31, 1989. Generally Speaking was succeeded by The Toronto Hospital staff newsletter, Caring.

The newsletter contains news and announcements, including staff appointments and retirements; special events; changes to Hospital services and facilities, obituaries etc.

Sub-series consists of rules and regulations for Hospital staff, patients and visitors issued by the CEO from time to time. Sub-series consists of two files:

Infections Committee records

Sub-series consists of minutes of meetings and related correspondence, reports and other materials distributed and considered at meetings.

Information for Superintendent’s Secretary [196-?]

Sub-series consists of instructions, model forms and sample correspondence maintained by the Superintendent to guide his Secretary in conducting certain recurring administrative business of the Office. Included are sample forms and letters for reporting infant deaths, compiling and updating lists of medical staff appointments and corresponding with appointees, preparing notices of meetings, agendas, minutes, and correspondence for meetings of the Board of Trustees; definitions of terminology and summary information about the composition, powers and responsibilities of various Hospital bodies, such as the Joint Hospitals Relations Committee; and instructions on the collection, preparation and distribution of budget documents.

Sub-series consists of the permanent records of intern staff, including performance appraisals. Some files also contain photographs of the interns.

Sub-series principally contains the chairman’s correspondence with librarians, the Medical Advisory Board, the TGH Medical Staff Association, library patrons and others. The files also contain some of the minutes of Committee meetings.
