Edward F. G. White fonds
CA ON00259 SC57 · Fundo · 1884-1934

Fonds consists of Ted White’s daily diaries, bird observation journals, and notes and correspondence regarding time spent on the R.M.S. Nascopie, in the Canadian Arctic.

There are 29 daily diaries in this fonds. Most of these volumes contain daily appointments, travel itineraries, some bird sighting notes, addresses and accounts. The later books tend to have more bird sighting notes than the earlier ones. Four of these are slightly more
specialized and contain different information. These are the notebook of game shot, Alaska bird notes, a field diary, and a notebook with correspondence and bird list relating to the Eastern Arctic Patrol. The notebook of game shot lists the specimens White collected between 1893 and 1896, where they were collected, how many of each species were collected, and his accounts for his game shooting expeditions. The Alaska bird notes list
the birds sighted, and where they were seen, each day during a trip to Alaska in the summer of 1923. The field notes diary records birds sighted, as well as observations regarding behaviour. The notebook relating to the Eastern Arctic Patrol contains notes about the patrol, a note about 3 specimens of black ducks, a list of birds sighted during the patrol, and a map of the 1934 Eastern Arctic Patrol which shows its path and itinerary.

There are three bird observation journals. They cover the years from 1884 to 1911. The first book has a list of the species of specimens he collected, their sex, how many of each species, and their value. The rest of the book and the two other volumes have bird observation entries organized first by year and then by species. Each note indicates when in the year each species was spotted, and how common it was when seen. These are not very detailed notes.

Lastly, this fonds contains a folder of notes, correspondence, observations, copies of reports, meeting minutes, press releases, and maps regarding White’s trip aboard the R.M.S. Nascopie in 1934. This was part of the Eastern Arctic Patrol, and most of the materials deal with various issues surrounding bird life in the Arctic. He was asked to report on four issues specifically: keeping track of migratory birds, report on the relationship between natives and bird life, the possibility of developing an eider duck industry to aid in conservation, and to observe waterfowl species. There are reports by White dealing with each of these specific issues.

Edmund William Waltho fonds
CA ON00259 SC56 · Fundo · 1936-1964

Fonds consists of Waltho's bird observation journals.

Waltho organized his journals in two different ways; daily accounts of bird observations, or monthly summaries of the species observed in Toronto. The first ten volumes (Files 1-5) in this fonds are the daily observation journals, which date from 1954 to 1964. There is no volume for 1959. These are yearly diaries that Waltho used to record observations on the days he went bird watching. The notes are generally limited to the species spotted (referred to by their common names) and where he was when he observed them. Occasionally, Waltho notes information on birds nests that he found and the number of eggs observed.

The last five volumes (Files 6-10) are his monthly summaries of bird observations from Toronto. These are from 1936 to 1958, but not all intervening years are represented. These volumes are set up like a checklist - the first page lists the bird species and the other sheets check off the species observed each day in a month, with a total at the bottom of each column for the number of birds seen each day. The first volume also has a collection of 76 Wonder Trails by Ellsworth Jaeger, which are short newspaper stories about different species of wildlife, with an accompanying drawing of that animal in its daily life.
