Pewter plates

Item is a set of four matching pewter plates. They have a motif of a bird on top of a crown stamped along the rim. The hallmarks on the back of the plate are likely pseudo marks, intended to replicate the look of silver goods. Above these, the letter X is stamped below a crown, a symbol that was often used to indicate a specific quality of metal.

Contents: 7. p. ms. report dictated by Rear-Admiral Charles Holmes for his superiors, recounting in detail the events of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. Major-General James Wolfe captured Quebec on Sept. 13, 1759, but died on the battlefield. His opponent, the Marquis de Montcalm died the next day. Holmes dictated a detailed account of the battle and sent two copies on separate ships to the British Admiralty. This document is the second copy of that report.

Snotneus lamp

Item is an early 19th century brass oil lamp. It features a removable fuel chamber with a spout where a length of wick would be fed through. When in use, the second spout would catch drips from the wick. The bottom of the lamp has a weighted base for use on a table, and a hook at the top so it could be hung against a wall.

This style of lamp was popularized by the Dutch and is known as a Snotneus lamp, which translates to nose-drip, and refers to the double spout design. Sometimes called whale oil lamps, they were typically used with animal fats.

Map is a reproduction of a map from 1800. It is the first printed map of Upper Canada, and details the new townships and counties in the region. As per the text on the map, it was commissioned by John Graves Simcoe, first lieutenant-governor. Originally it would have included a text with topographic descriptions.

Contents: one 53 p. vellum bound ms. cookbook of unknown origin. Cookbook features approxamitely 50 recipes in at least fifteen different hands. Most recipes are for desserts, although a few are for savoury dishes and household products. Some recipes are signed and signatures include M. Moore, Mary Dawson, and S. Lowels. Also included in the file is an index of recipes and the original seller's note.

Whiskey Ledger belonging to Nathaniel Haskill who owned property and lived at Lot 16, Broken Front and Lot 165, Concession 1, Hope Township (now the Municipality of Port Hope). The earliest date of entry is 1801 with most dates primarily from 1807- 1813. - the inside pages are hand written with the purchaser's name, a description and amount of whiskey purchased and the means of payment. Often based on a barter system with payment made in the form of bushels of wheat, cows, barrels of flour etc. Some customers paid in cash. - comprised of 145 pages which are written upon with the remaining pages blank. The first 33 pages include more than one customer, where later pages, 34 - 145 are devoted to a single customer. Each customer has two pages together, side by side. In handwriting at the top is the name of the customer. First name on the left page and surname on the right side page. Left page also lists the date, amount of whiskey obtained and the cost in pounds and shillings. The left page indicates the means of payment.

Map is a composite image created from two separate photographs detailing the boundaries of the Toronto Purchase between the Crown and the Mississaugas of the Credit.

The original sale is dated to 1787, however there were questions raised about the legitimacy of the documents and about the delineation of the land. In 1805 a formal purchase was documented, and is referenced in the text of the map. This is accompanied by the signatures of the purchase. William Claus, the Deputy Superintendent of Indian Affairs, signed on behalf of the Crown.
