Jacques C. Beauchamp fonds

Fonds consists of the professional papers of Jacques C. Beauchamp, a bridge engineer and later head of Structures for Public Works Canada. Fonds also includes Beauchamp’s articles and reports on bridge design, construction and appraisal plus articles and reports produced by his staff. There are files on the creation of the federal Place du Portage complex in Gatineau, Québec, 1958-1975, and federal bridges crossing the Ottawa River.

There are numerous files on the role of Public Works Canada in overseeing the feasibility and the bidding competition for a crossing of the Northumberland Strait between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick which resulted in the Confederation Bridge. Included is historical material from previous designs and the role of the federal government in building a crossing as well as feasibility studies by consultants and the first round of technical proposals for building a crossing.

Fonds also contains Beauchamp’s subject files on bridge types (cable-stayed, concrete, box girder etc.). Other subject files cover construction standards, environmental assessments, seismic events etc. There are prints and slides of interprovincial bridges, the construction of Olympic facilities in Calgary and specific bridge types.

The material is organized into six series: Personal; Public Works Canada; Northumberland Crossing Project; Bridge Subject Files; General Subject Files; and Photographs and Slides.

Fonds consists of biographical material on Davies; his personal correspondence, scientific articles, notes, reports and talks; his journals and trip notebooks 1928-1980 and college notebooks. Articles, scientific notebooks and reports by Davies and others relating to the Byrd Antarctic Expedition of 1928-1930 plus material on American Antarctic research in the 1970s. Davies’ articles, notebooks and reports on the Second Polar Year Expedition to Chesterfield Inlet NWT of 1932-1933. Davies’ correspondence, notebooks and procedures relating to his work for the Carnegie Institution 1931-1940, including his work as as director of the observatory in Huancayo, Peru. Articles, reports, publications by Davies and others relating to the Defence Research Telecommunications Establishment 1943-1970 relating to research in the Arctic, radio communication, the Canadian research satellites Alouette I (launched 1962) and Alouette II (launched 1965). Reference material related to Davies’ fields of interest. Individual photos and albums relating to Davies, the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, the Second International Polar Year expedition to Chesterfield Inlet, social activities at DRTE etc. There is also a series of records that Davies compiled while planning to write his history of DRTE, as well as a series consisting of 4 objects. The fonds is arranged in 10 series.

Douglas Parkhill fonds

Fonds consists of Parkhill’s curriculum vitae and copies of his articles and presentations on computer communication, Telidon and videotext 1978-1985. Parkhill’s files on informatics while he was Assistant Deputy Minister (Research) with the federal Department of Communications from 1974 until his retirement in 1984 which includes published and unpublished reports. Parkhill’s correspondence and 91 audio tapes of recorded interviews with leaders in the videotext and teletext fields in Europe, North America and Far East that led to his manuscript “The Beginning of a Beginning” (1985). A large series on informatics including correspondence, articles, published and unpublished reports and studies covering videotex, teletext and Telidon 1972-1988. Subject files covering computerization and office communications systems (OCS). Also some photos of Parkhill receiving awards and his retirement.

The fonds consists of a large collection of printed material relating to the St. Lawrence Deep Waterway/ St. Lawrence Seaway, 1894-1969. It also contains Canadian and American federal, provincial/state, regional and municipal descriptions, reports, and submissions. There is also material from associations including American pro and anti-St. Lawrence Seaway lobby groups. There are articles from newspapers, magazines and other publications about the Seaway and its costs/benefits. There is also Wright’s manuscript, galleys and reviews of his book “The St. Lawrence Deep Waterway: A Canadian Appraisal” (1935) as well as chronologies and Wright’s talks and submission about the Seaway. There is a small amount of Wright’s correspondence, mostly asking for information about the Seaway. Lastly, there are special newspaper sections about the Seaway as well as maps and oversize documents. The fonds is arranged in five series.

Fonds consists of textual, graphic, and digital material regarding Althea Douglas’ professional life, with a focus on her 7-year career with IMAX from 1984-1991. Records include: drafts and final copies of technical manuals; correspondence; invoices; internal memos and other publications; document translations; and technical manuals for elements developed out-of-house and incorporated into an IMAX theatre system. The computer files on 19 computer disks are AUTOCAD and Corel files for these manuals. There is also some material showing J. Creighton Douglas’ contributions to these projects, an interview between Althea Douglas and Curator Bryan Dewalt on 3 DVDs, three photographs (two of Althea and one of Creighton), and copies of both her and J. Creighton Douglas’ curricula vitae. Four ticket stubs were dissociated from the materials; they are believed to originate from France. Fonds is divided into 3 series with 30 files total; files within the series are generally arranged in chronological order.

Fritz Lehmann fonds

The fonds reflects Lehmann’s research on Canadian railway development and its sources of locomotives. He conducted research on companies that built locomotives in Halifax, Saint John, Montreal, Toronto, and Hamilton, but there is also an entire series of research files on the succession of companies in Kingston, including particularly the Canadian Locomotive Company. The sous-fonds reflects Sr. Mary Lillian Kuntz’s time as an educator, judge, administrator, and her Congregational service. The earliest record is a class photograph from St. Angela’s College where she was a student, followed by her high school diploma from Catholic Central High School in 1953. The records have a global geographic spread with the inclusion of colour transparencies of her travels to the United Kingdom, Africa and Europe. The materials focus on her time in Yellowknife, NWT, Uganda, Nelson, B.C., and London, Ont. The sous-fonds includes photographs, sound recordings, moving image recordings, and a diploma.

Collection consists of records of John Norton as well as research materials created and acquired by J. McE Murray and Carl F. Klinck in the course of researching the life and work of John Norton. Included is an original diary of John Norton containing an early version of parts of his 1816 journal. Also included are transcriptions of the diary and Norton's letters (transcribed by Murray) as well as photocopies of the manuscript of his 1816 journal (photocopied by Klinck). Collection also contains research notes, correspondence, and clippings relating to Murray's and Klinck's research.

This fonds contains architectural drawings and textual records of 73 projects undertaken by Charles H. Gillin from 1948 to 1976. The projects are mostly schools in and around London, primarily for the Separate School Board. Also included are residences, restaurants, public buildings, golf and country clubs, day care centres, an inn, apartments and a fire department machine shop and garage. A significant portion of the projects are additions and/or alterations to existing buildings. There is a series of project related material including photographs, textual records, two name plates and a CD-ROM containing digital photographs.
