This fonds consists of photographs and textual records created and or received by the Matthew Wells Company in Guelph, Ontario during the course of their business activities. The photographs include aerial shots of the plant in Guelph and of one based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. There is also a photograph of the plant’s employees, a woman’s sport team and of the company’s products such as bottles of jams and jellies likely used for promotional or advertisement purposes. The textual components consist of the company’s stationary, examples of labels for use on their products, payment vouchers and a booklet entitled, NPPA Sponsored Fundamental Research Unraveling the Mysteries of Pickling, 70 Years of Progress: The Pickle Fair. The fonds is comprised of the following series: Series 1: Personal and Business, Series 2: Political Career of Thomas Bain, and Series 3: Correspondence with Ottawa.

The first series is comprised of records related to Thomas Bain’s business with the Landed Banking and Loan Company as well as personal documents relating to the Bain family. The records include correspondence between family members, financial documents pertaining to the estate of Thomas Bain, invitations and cards, newspaper clippings, contracts and other financial documents, and photographs.

The second series consists of materials created or received during Thomas Bain’s career as a MP in the House of Commons and Speaker of the House of Commons. The series is comprised of parliamentary documents, election propaganda and other documents, correspondence between other political figures, notes about policies and political issues, newspaper articles about Thomas Bain’s political career, invitations and programmes, and other miscellaneous documents from the Canadian House of Commons.

The third series consists of Bain’s letters to his wife in Strabane while he was in Ottawa. The letters are a mixture of news of parliamentary happenings and gossip, his spare time occupations and companions, and directions to his wife on the management of the farm, family, and household.

Fonds consists of a typescript copy of the diary of Jonathan Sissons. Diary entries relate to: farming activities, such as fertilizing, ploughing, draining, constructing fences, caring for animals, haying, and threshing; road work; logging; travels to Barrie for errands; agricultural meetings and fairs; political meetings to organize a reform convention and to elect candidates; local events, particularly fires; social visits; and church activities such as prayer meetings and Bible passages read at sermons. Fonds also contains notes on the diary by his son, Professor C.B. Sissons.

Phenix family fonds

Fonds consists primarily of diaries of two generations of the John Phenix family. Fonds includes a small number of diaries between 1869-1875, written by John Phenix (b. 1828). A much longer run of 37 yearly diaries dates between 1892 and 1934 inclusive, although books are missing for 1898-99, 1916 and 1920-1922. These were originally created by John Phenix (1860-1934). Entries are daily, and note the weather, family events and concerns, the topic of scripture on Sundays, and daily work around the farm. Details about daily work are often specific, in terms of how much was done, with who, and with what implements. The final entry in the diary, dated September 29, 1934, ends with the words "I feel sick". The fonds also includes a will and other legal documents of the Phenix family.

Materials in this fonds relate to various activities, topics and organizations, including: the Toronto-Bellwoods riding, the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council, the Canadian League for Peace and Democracy, the Civil Rights Union, the League for Democratic Rights, the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, the Ontario Department of Education, various subjects in Canadian history, mining, the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the National Council for Canadian-Soviet Friendships, and the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada.
