Fonds consists of documents relating to the Zola Research Program and the publication of the 10 volume "Émile Zola Correspondance" series, including project files, inventories, reference materials, photocopies of Émile Zola’s correspondence and other documents related to the project. The project files contained in this fonds document the development and activities of the Zola Research Program. Project files records include inventories of various letters, funding information, budgetary forms, donor agreements, publicity documents and summaries of the project written both by external entities (newspapers) and internal figures (members of the Program staff). Also included are supplementary documents that were collected to create a broader contextual framework. Each letter is be supported with annotations and background information on the correspondents, events or people discussed in the letters as well as the social and political state of France during the 19th century. While the collection of letters by Zola was the primary mandate of the project, along the way the Program collected a vast number of reference materials to broaden the perspective. This fonds contains the off-prints, various documents (both collected by Zola and collected by the Zola Research Program about various 19th century figures) and bibliographies. Books collected by the Program are now the basis of the Émile Zola Collection in the Rare Book Collection of Kelly Library.

The correspondence is composed mostly of photocopies of handwritten letters, post cards, cartes de visites, telegrams and typed transcriptions of letters. The correspondence is a mixture of professional and personal letters that discuss various matters from the publication of Zola’s main works to the birth of his children. It is clear from the various handwritings and documentation styles that multiple figures were involved in the processing of the letters. However, as a Research Associate and long-term member of the team, Dorothy Speirs was the primary figure creating, processing and cross-referencing the letters. This can be seen through the presence of her initials on most of the documents. Additionally, as Project Archivist Hélène Issayevitch organized the letters and maintained the record-keeping practices throughout. It is important to note that after the dissolution of the Zola Research Program in 1995, Speirs continued collecting reference materials and adding them to the collection. As a result, there are a number of documents contained within that extend outside the dates of the Program. The result of this continued research is an additional publication completed in 2008, in association with Owen Morgan.

This collection remains the largest repository of Émile Zola’s letters available in North America. In recent years, the descendants of Zola have divided the estate, including the letters, resulting in a dispersal of the documents. This collection represents the largest single collection of Zola’s letters that is accessible and open to the public. Additionally, this fonds contains a fountain of information on key figures in the Naturalist Movement of the 19th century, as well as other well-known artists, scholars, intellectuals and political and social figures, including J.K. Huysmans, Edmond de Goncourt, Gustave Flaubert, Édouard Manet, Alfred Bruneau, Paul Alexis, Henry Céard, Léon Hennique, and Guy de Maupassant - all of which can be found either through personal discussions in the letters or supplementary documentation. The hidden value in this fonds lies in the plethora of reference resources that are available. The fonds also houses a vast number of off-prints that explore various aspects of Zola’s life as well as the broader Naturalist community of the 19th century. Some other significant pieces include original 19th century illustrated theatrical pamphlets from the Théâtre Libre, various original newspaper clippings and original letters by Émile Zola, Alexandrine Zola, Paul Alexis and Jules Claretie.

Fonds is arranged into 6 series:

1) Project Files series: consists of a variety of records that document the development of the project over the years, including funding information, publicity and marketing documents, donor agreements, budgetary forms and some correspondence amongst various scholars.

2) Letters by Zola series: consists of photocopies of letters written by Zola between 1856 and 1902. This series also contains an original letter by Émile Zola, dated June 22, 1890 (File #107).

3) Letters to Zola series: contains photocopies of letters written to Zola between 1858 and 1902. This series also contains an original letter by Alexandrine Zola to Émile Zola, dated May 27, 1890 (File #248).

4) Letters by Contemporaries series: consists of photocopies of letters sent between Zola’s family and contemporaries. This series contains an original letter from Paul Alexis to Léon Hennique, dated September 19, 1887 (File #420).

5) Collected and Reference Material series: contains photocopies of documents about the project and the various correspondents in the fonds (documents written by or about Émile Zola, documents about his family and correspondents, off-prints of works written about Émile Zola and naturalism, project inventories of letters and bibliographies). Series contains a variety of original documents including newspapers and theatrical pamphlets.

6) Alphabetical Index Forms series: consists of biographical and contextual information on correspondents of Émile Zola, figures mentioned in the letters, or the main journals for which he wrote.

The Zepha Trevorrow fonds consists of 15 postcards and two letters that Ed Trevorrow sent to his wife, Zepha, while in Northern Ontario in 1911. The fonds gives insight into the life of a gold prospector in Northern Ontario in the early 1900s. Indeed, not only does Ed Trevorrow report of his gold prospecting to his wife, but the correspondence also accounts for the different locations visited between July 10 and August 15, 1911.

Although Trevorrow travelled between Timmins and North Bay, and even on the Québec side of the region of Temiscaming, the images of the postcards mostly depict the South Porcupine 1911 fire, and early mine settlements of the same area.

Item is one mug in the likeness of Winston Churchill. It is an example of a toby jug, a style of pottery popularized in the 19th century that consists of a seated figure usually depicted drinking or smoking.

The William Meredith Ireton fonds contains 22 black & white photographs and 12 black & white negatives that attest to Ireton’s professional relocation to Northern Ontario and document the way of life in that area between 1925 and 1947.

Of the 22 photographs, at least 13 were taken in Connaught Station, Ontario before 1930. These photos depict Ireton himself, local townspeople (along with a dog named Woof Woof), social activities such as a picnic and concert, and buildings throughout town, including the drug store where Ireton worked as a pharmacist. Additional photos and negatives depict scenes on a dock, and of an unknown wedding, both in unidentified locations. Also included in the fonds are two photos of an Osulake Mines site at O’Sullivan Lake in 1947, likely reflecting Ireton’s work as an insurance salesman throughout Northern Ontario.

The collection consists of several diaries written during trips to the United States and England during the 1850s and 1860s in search of building funds for Trinity College. From his three trips to the United States in 1852 and 1853 there are five notebooks as well as a letter concerning a resolution towards the endowment of Trinity College. There are 98 Cartes de Visite as well as an extensive diary from his 1864 trip to England.

The fonds consists of four notebooks of lectures delivered in Trenton and Kingston for the benefit of the Trinity Hall Fund, and a fragment of a manuscript lecture on climate.

Fonds consists of records generated by the members of the Whitby Knitting Club. Records represent club operations associated with fundraising, knitting, distributing packages overseas, and the resulting incoming and outgoing correspondence. Fonds consists of two series: Administrative records and Correspondence.

Fonds consists of records relating to the administration, operation, and activities of the Whitby Dunlops hockey team. Records were created by the executive members of the Whitby Senior Hockey Club. Fonds is comprised of the following series: Financial records, administrative records, correspondence, advertisement and sponsorship, and programs and ephemera.

This fonds consists of posters created and or accumulated by the What's Up Postal Service. These records document the business activities of this service which created publicity materials for various Guelph based organizations and events. Posters were created for events held at the River Run Centre, the University of Guelph, and the Guelph Jazz Festival.

There is no further arrangement to these records.

Item is a wash basin that would have likely been part of a larger chamber set that would include items like a chamber pot, toothbrush holder, pitcher, and soap holder. The basin features embossing around the lip of the bowl and has a dark blue floral transferware pattern that is marked as the "Nancy" pattern.

The War Memory Fonds contain material relating to the remembrance of Allied military activity from 1914 to 1945. The material includes books, magazines, articles, newsletters, pamphlets, museum guides, maps, correspondence, and photographs which primarily discuss Allied involvement in the First and Second World Wars, including general histories, individual accounts, and battlefield maps.

The War Memory Fonds represents hundreds of individual donations bequeathed to Professor Terry Copp over the past several decades. They deal primarily with the Second World War, but some earlier material exists. Professor Copp has used many records from this collection to write on various aspects of the Canadian Army during the Second World War.

The fonds consists of the signed agreement between Doctors Geikie and Rolph in 1857 in which they become partners. There is some correspondence and a number of journal articles written by Dr. Geikie on various topics. Many tributes to Dr. Geikie, printed and handwritten, are included.

Fonds consists of records kept by W.B. Crowe while a student at the Trinity Medical College (1892-1896) and for several years after graduation. Files include lecture notes and examination papers; printed ‘admission cards’ allowing entrance to lectures; receipts from the Registrar; certificates from the various levels of his training; programs from Medical College social functions including the annual dinners (1892-1895); speeches; commencement programs; notebooks; and papers relating to his time in Scotland. Also included is a prescription book with initial date of March 1894 that seems to have been used throughout his career as a physician. Photographs include a tintype of W.B Crowe treating a patient, a photograph of the dissecting class, and a class photograph. Also included is a clipping from the Toronto Globe and Mail showing the graduating class composite picture for 1895-6.

The fonds consists of records produced during the course of Victoria Gray's activities in theatre and music.

The United Copper Nickel Workers (UCNW) fonds consists of three records that document a particular era of the history of the nickel industry in Canada: World War II. More specifically, the Constitution and by-laws of the union attest to the objectives of its members, while the agreement with Inco provides insights on working conditions. The brief submitted by Inco to the National War Labour Board in 1943 also provides information on labour relations during the war.

Collection consists of various local history information and original documents compiled and collected by Norman Thomas Long over the course of his life living and working in Port Hope, Ontario. Most of the collection is housed in a vertical subject filing cabinet in the Reading Room at the Port Hope Archives (a file-listing is available). The Uffelman Fonds contain a collection of letters written by three brothers, Sheldon, William, and Orley Uffelman of Waterloo, ON, during the First World War.

Note that the transcription of each letter is under the "Scope and Content" section of each file, as well as a downloadable .pdf of each original letter.

This collection consists of administrative records, calendars, student academic records, and records of student life at Trinity Medical College. Administrative records include Minutes of Corporation, records related to the amalgamation of medical faculties at Trinity College and the University of Toronto, correspondence files, a small number of general administrative and financial records, a Register of Students, and miscellaneous reports. Student records include textual and photographic records of academic standing and participation; records of student life include documents and photographs related to college groups, committees, societies, and teams. Also in the collection are a cap, belt, (and blazer purported to be from Trinity Medical College), as well as a manual press of the seal of Trinity Medical College.

Fonds includes agendas, minutes, and supporting documents of Senate meetings. Files also include correspondence and notices of meetings as well as reports and documents pertaining to the sub committees of the Senate: the Library, Media, and Academic computing committee; Student Awards committee; Academic Appointment committee; Planning and Outreach committee; Community Affairs committee; and the Nomination committee.
