Also discusses the estimated costs associated with these plans. Includes charts, reports, case studies, memoranda, correspondence and draft copies of new or amended policies.

Sub-series consists of files regarding the changing role of the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade Group (4 CIBG) in response to rising political tensions and the development of nuclear technologies. Includes memoranda, reports and correspondence that discuss moving 4 CIBG from a peacetime to defence position. Also includes documents on 4 CIBG’s role in guarding nuclear equipment during transportation and at Special Ammunitions Sites (SAS), and estimated vehicle and equipment requirements.

Series contains files on infrastructure development in the North, which was done to better equip the region to respond to enemy threats. Topics include Canadian sovereignty over Arctic waters and Soviet economic aspects in the North. Includes meeting agendas and minutes from the Advisory Committee on Northern Development. Also contains annual government reports on Northern Canada such as: Progress Report on Federal Government’s Building Programme in Northern Canada, Proposed Building Programme in Northern Canada, and Report on Army Activities in the North.

Sub-series consists of files pertaining to NATO air defence in Europe, and its efforts to integrate defence control of all member countries to enhance security and military capabilities. Topics include the development of the Supreme Headquarters of Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Air Defence Technical Centre, as well as the development of an early warning system for allied command in Europe. Also discusses the rules of engagement for unidentified aircraft, defence against very low-flying aircraft, and long-term requirements for air defence.

Series consists of files pertaining to the British Armed Forces. Includes messages, reports and memoranda that discuss the reorganization of British Forces, and the command and administrative structure of the army in the field. Also includes booklets on defence and pay rates, the 1948 National Service Bill, and maps showing locations of British Armed Forces.

Series consists of files from the Canada-USA Military Cooperation Committee, as well as those from the sub-committee on Mapping and Charting. Documents mainly discuss joint efforts between Canada and the United States to develop defence plans for North America, including security plans, the Distant Early Warning line, and aerial monitoring projects. Sub-series consists of files from the Sub-Committee responsible for mapping and charting locations in North America. Files include plans to photograph the Arctic Islands, as well as plans and priorities for aerial photography in other areas of North America. Also includes maps to identify the status of small, medium and large scale mapping projects.

Sub-series includes various files from the Canada-USA Military Cooperation Committee. Topics include the Canada-USA Basic Security Plan, Canadian Army operating requirements in the United States, rules of engagement for unidentified submarines, and air defence objective plans. Also includes files from the Meteorological Sub-Committee, which examined the impact of weather events on North American defence plans. The majority of the files consist of meeting minutes, memoranda, draft reports and proposed amendments to reports.

Sub-series includes several versions of the Canadian Army Defence Plan (CADP) as well as amendments to the copies. Also includes memoranda, reports and meeting minutes from the development of the Plans.

Sub-series consists of files contributing to the development of the Canada-USA Emergency Defence Plan, which was to provide guidelines for the mutual defence of North America in the event of war with Soviet Union. Also includes files on the ALCANUS EDP, which was developed to support the Canada-USA Emergency Defence Plan. Files mainly include reports from conferences, draft emergency plans and proposed amendments.

Sub-series contains files that contributed to the development of NATO’s Annual Review of Defence Build-Up. Documents mainly include correspondence, meeting minutes and memoranda from the working group on annual review procedure. Includes draft questionnaires and Canadian replies to the finalized questionnaires.

Sub-series consists mainly of annual NATO reports on military activities from the past year and committee meeting minutes from the NATO Military Committee. Also includes progress reports on issues that confronted the Committee.

Sub-series consists of files that contributed to the preparation of NATO Triennial Reviews. Files include comments and amendments from the working group that developed the Triennial Review procedures, procedures for assembling the review, and Canadian replies to the review questionnaires. Also includes reports of NATO force requirements and comments about the reports from different member countries.

Series consists of files regarding Canada’s contribution to United Nations missions in the Congo. Includes memoranda and correspondence which largely concentrate on the United Nation’s requests for additional aid, and the possibility of Canada providing this support. Also includes reports on the status of Canadian personnel in the Congo.

Series consists of memoranda regarding casualties in conventional and nuclear warfare in the early 1960s. Includes a conventional casualty estimate for Ground Forces Allied Command Europe in 1956. Also includes extracts from the minutes of the Army Policy Co-ordinating Committee (APCC) 9 May 1954 meeting defining the division of responsibility between the General Staff (GS) and Adjutant General (AG) branches.

Series consists of files pertaining to Canada’s defence policies against enemy attacks. Topics include Canada’s commitments to NATO defence in Europe, as well as its contributions to joint Canada-USA plans to defend North America. The files contain documents that discuss ways in which security and military capabilities can be enhanced to provide better defence, and evaluate Canada’s commitment to these plans. Fonds consists of files from the Directorate of Military Operations and Planning. Files mainly consist of meeting minutes, memoranda, draft reports and proposed amendments. There are also defence plans and research papers from Canada and NATO. The majority of the documents evaluate the Soviet threat during the Cold War, and focus on security and military preparations in response to rising tensions. The files are arranged in numerical order according to the file numbers created by the Central Registry system. There are 17 series:

Sub-series consists of files on Canada’s role in developing new missile technologies and assessing enemy threats to North America. Many documents are from the Joint Ballistic Missile Defence Staff, and speculate on USSR’s missile technologies and capabilities, and assessed whether the current or developing technologies were adequate to address the threat. Key topics include NIKE ZEUS missile system, protection of key resources and borders in North America, and details about different missiles being developed. Includes memoranda, meeting minutes and reports on various projects such as Projects VELA and HELMET.

Sub-series consists of files pertaining to NATO’s military strength in the event of war and plans for the future. These reports were based on an analysis of scientific data on possible advances in military technology in upcoming years by the Von Karman Committee, and on the geo-strategic situation of the Soviet Bloc and western hemisphere. The series also contains documents that discuss NATO force planning and MC-70 (minimum essential force requirements), as well as Canada’s commitments to NATO. It is mainly comprised of messages, reports and draft copies of papers on NATO’s defence efforts.

Sub-series consists of files on Canada and the United States’ joint efforts to develop security plans and warning systems to defend North America against enemy threats. Files consist mainly of reports, charts and draft agreements which assess the threat and discuss ways in which Canada and the United States could collaborate to protect North America, including the development of a Distant Early Warning line, shared occupancy of key geographic locations, and security plans.
