Series consists material documenting the military life of J.D. Prentice from 1912 to 1955. Includes biographical information and personal papers such as correspondences, statements of service, test records, certificates appointment and promotion papers. Also includes naval messages, a scrapbook and 1941 photographs of Prentice on the HMCS Chambly. One interesting document include a British publication “German, Italian and Japanese U-Boat Casualties during the war”. The major subjects include: submarines and Second World War casualties.

Series consists of material documenting the naval and civilian life of James Douglas Prentice from 1914 to 1979. Includes a First World War notebook with notes and probably from Prentice’s training at Osborne, an officer training school in England. Also includes an essay and diagram by Prentice on the Battle of Jutland in 1916, and a letter from Prentice to a friend or relative describing the evacuation from Smyrna in 1922. There is personal correspondence between Mrs. Patricia Prentice to her husband detailing her home life during 1927 to 1942, as well as correspondence between the Commander and his Aunt Betty during the First World War. There are also: a diary of events by Prentice with the 11th Escort Squadron in 1944, photographs from Prentice’s boyhood on Gang Ranch; extracts from the Commanding Officer’s diary on the HMCS Kootenay in 1944; and newspaper clippings regarding the Prentice marriage, the awarding of the DSO [Distinguished Service Order) to Prentice and his obituary in 1979. The series is arranged in alphabetical order by file title.

Series consists material containing J.D. Prentice’s personal manuscripts of children’s and young adult stories. It includes the CBC broadcast scripts that Prentice was a part of. Included is a manuscript for Teddy’s Story, a children’s novella that was published by Lovat Dickson Limited, London in 1937. Other manuscripts that were written throughout the interwar period are also included. Some of the major subjects include: military bases in Newfoundland, First World War in Russia, New Zealand, the manuscripts by Prentice and the merchant marine. A description for each manuscript prepared by Alison Prentice is included at the beginning of the series. Thereafter, the remaining series is organized in alphabetical order by file title.

Series consists of photographs illustrating the non-naval life of James Douglas Prentice and his family during the interwar years and after his retirement from the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). The majority of the photographs were taken at the Gang Ranch.

Series consists of correspondence and telegrams documenting the naval life of J.D. Prentice in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and the home life of his wife in Halifax during the Second World War, particularly for the year 1944. There is also an RCN prayer book given to Prentice in 1941 and used by him when he was on: the HMCS Chambly in the Battle of the Atlantic; the HMCS Ottawa and HMCS Qu’Appelle in the English Channel and Bay of Biscay in 1944; and the HMCS Somers Isles in Bermuda in 1945. There are also some miscellaneous documents, including a 1940 service certificate of Patricia Prentice and a handwritten biography of Prentice.
