Series consists of four objects that Davies used at DRTE or was given on or after his retirement in 1969: two stamps showing his title, one commemorative plaque, and one silver cigarette box.

Byrd Antarctic Expedition

Series consists of background scientific data on Antarctica and material relating to the Byrd Antarctic Expedition of 1928-1930, including Davies’ correspondence, radiograms, and scientific notebooks. Series includes articles and offprints 1931-1942, based on scientific data collected during the expedition, as well as correspondence, presentations, newsletters, articles, reports and US government publications related to the resurgence of interest in Antarctica, 1960-1980.

Defence Research Telecommunications Establishment (DRTE)

Series consists of a small number of files relating to Davies’ research during the Second World War and immediately afterwards. Files on his work for the Defence Research Board and its constituent, the Defence Research Telecommunications Establishment (DRTE) which include administrative material, reports on visits to foreign defence research groups, Arctic research and telecommunications research, a section on the Canadian Alouette I and II, ISIS and Telstar satellites which includes agreements with NASA, planning documents, launches, and numerous articles and reports on these satellites.

Fonds consists of biographical material on Davies; his personal correspondence, scientific articles, notes, reports and talks; his journals and trip notebooks 1928-1980 and college notebooks. Articles, scientific notebooks and reports by Davies and others relating to the Byrd Antarctic Expedition of 1928-1930 plus material on American Antarctic research in the 1970s. Davies’ articles, notebooks and reports on the Second Polar Year Expedition to Chesterfield Inlet NWT of 1932-1933. Davies’ correspondence, notebooks and procedures relating to his work for the Carnegie Institution 1931-1940, including his work as as director of the observatory in Huancayo, Peru. Articles, reports, publications by Davies and others relating to the Defence Research Telecommunications Establishment 1943-1970 relating to research in the Arctic, radio communication, the Canadian research satellites Alouette I (launched 1962) and Alouette II (launched 1965). Reference material related to Davies’ fields of interest. Individual photos and albums relating to Davies, the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, the Second International Polar Year expedition to Chesterfield Inlet, social activities at DRTE etc. There is also a series of records that Davies compiled while planning to write his history of DRTE, as well as a series consisting of 4 objects. The fonds is arranged in 10 series.

Davies, Frank Thomas, 1904-1981

History of the Communications Research Telecommunications Centre Project

After retirement, Davies began a project to write a history of the CRC. He died before finishing the project and the documents were kept by the CRC Library and then in the office of radio scientist Jack Belrose. The material was described and digitized by the Friends of CRC. Series consists reports, type-written documents, hand-drawn ionospheric drawings, posters and photographs. It also contains three DVDs with digital surrogates of most of the originals. The originals are arranged in the order that the Friends of the CRC noted in its inventory.

Huancayo Observatory, Peru

Series consists of instructions, procedures, correspondence and notes relating to Davies’ work for the Carnegie Institute of Washington as director as the Huancayo Observatory in Peru. 1924, 1929-1940, 1960.

Journals and Notebooks

Series consists daily journals covering Davies’ participation in the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, the Second Polar Year Expedition to Chersterfield, NWT, his work for Carnegie in Peru, his defence research work for the Canadian government and his retirement years. Also includes notebooks for specific trips and projects, 1955-1969.

Personal Documents

Series consists of personal material, including biographical and family data, personal correspondence, university notebooks, etc. Also includes Davies’ published and unpublished notes, articles, reports and talks, 1930-1972.

Photographs, Artwork, and Oversize Material

Series consists photos relating to Davies, his family, exploration and DRTE activities. Photo albums relating to the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, Second Polar Year Expedition to Chesterfield NWT and Huanlayo Observatory in Peru. Diplomas and certificates relating to Davies’ education and career.

Reference Files

Series consists of miscellaneous files relating to Davies’ career and personal interests including scientific articles and offprints, Expo 67, various historical notes and miscellaneous writings.

Second Polar Year Expedition, Chesterfield NWT

Series consists of Davies’ notebooks, diaries and scientific data gathered during the expedition to Chesterfield, Northwest Territories (now Igluligaarjuk, Nunavut). Also includes a small number of reports and articles based on it.
