Personal and Early Life

The records within this series pertain to two aspects of Lynch’s life: that of his childhood and that of personal aspects of his adulthood. The records of his childhood include items related to school life such as yearbooks, report cards, school assignments, certificates/diplomas, and articles written for the school newspaper. They also include other aspects of his childhood such as newspaper clippings from his hometown, and family photos. Records which relate to his life as an adult include wills of himself and family members, graduate directories, university diplomas, curriculum vitae, immigration and moving records, house deeds and sale documents, renovations correspondence and plans, income tax forms, and photos of family and friends. Some records in this series relate to his work at the University of Toronto but fit best as personal records. These include documents around tenure, individual study courses, association documents, recommendations, committees, policies, academic surveys, and scholarship applications. Records include those made in the United States and Canada.

This series contains predominantly incoming letters to Michael Lynch. Where copies were made by Lynch, it includes outgoing letters by the creator. The series includes correspondence with friends, family, colleagues, conferences, mailing lists, organizations, newsletters, universities/colleges, and journals. Where folders contained letters from just one individual or organization, they are labelled as such on the folder. Many folders contained no title and had no apparent individual or organization to whom they were addressed to, or were left unfiled in boxes. In such cases, these records were labelled “mixed correspondence” and organized by date.

Gay Studies Caucus

The series contains materials created during Lynch’s period of time as the editor of the Gay Studies Newsletter (GSN) or pertaining to the Gay Studies Caucus, which was held at the Modern Language Associations (MLA) conference. Records that pertain to the GSN includes call for abstracts, bibliographic information for gay texts, GSN newsletters, submissions sent to the newsletter, reviews for the newsletter, mailing lists, correspondence, and backups of the newsletter held on floppy disc. The series also includes the MLA newsletters and paper abstracts from individuals who participated in the Gay Studies Caucus Session at the MLA.

The series contains records pertaining to research being undertaken by Lynch or conferences he attended or organized. This includes research and conferences around AIDS, homosexuality, homophobia, gay rights and issues. There is included articles for the body politic and other journals, as well as research and news clippings for festivals and plays. Some materials came from un-named folders or were kept in boxes with no description. These have been complied into folders titles “mixed materials.” Two major areas of research included in the series includes work on Marsden Hartley and Walt Whitman. The Hartley section includes correspondence with individuals and institutions on Hartley’s work, slide images of Hartley’s paintings, and photos of places Hartley painted at. The Whitman section includes correspondence and conference materials relating to the Whitman in Ontario Conference in 1980. It also includes notes, book proposal, correspondence, manuscripts, and slides on the topic of Whitman.

The series contains two sections. The first includes articles and manuscripts, including drafts, written by Lynch. Types of written items include academic articles, articles and reviews for non-academic journals and newsletters, short stories, poems, and his PhD Thesis. The second half of the series includes predominantly articles, although there is also some short stories and poems, written by other individuals which were sent to Lynch.

This series contains four predominant categories. The first is notes that Lynch took for papers and classes for highs school; the second is notes and papers written by Lynch for college and university classes; the third category is notes and papers written by Lynch for ongoing research while working as a professor at the University of Toronto; and the fourth category is notes Lynch made for the purpose of classes he was teaching or preparing to teach. The records are ordered as Lynch had them, either labeled by individual, topic, or course code.

Gay Groups

The series contains records relating to gay groups which Lynch was a founding member or a just a general member of. Major groups he was involved in include AIDS Action Now, AIDS Committee of Toronto, the AIDS Memorial in Toronto, Gay Fathers of Toronto, and the Toronto Centre for Lesbian and Gay Studies. Materials predominantly include correspondence, news clippings, newsletters, organizational records such as mailing lists, meeting agendas and minutes, and budgets, brochures, and press releases.

Care Team

The series contains records created by Lynch’s care team during his final months of life. The records were kept for the purpose of creating an archive of his last moments and the individuals who cared for him. The materials include shift logs, information sheets around medications, meals, and tasks, meeting notes, contacts, and Lynch’s wishes for his death and funeral.
