The series contains records that document William Atkinson’s career with the Royal Naval Reserve and the Royal Canadian Navy. It includes service records, correspondence, reports, naval messages, clippings, newsletters spanning from the beginning of the Second World War to 1960. It also includes a transcript from the Foolscap oral history project that discusses Atkinson’s time with the Royal Canadian Navy. Also documented is Atkinson’s 1991 information request made to the National Archives of Canada under the Privacy Act. This request returned Atkinson’s service, medical, dental and performance records, but did not include records relating to the Canadian Naval Intelligence or RCMP investigation of Atkinson.

The series contains personal and political correspondence sent and received by William Atkinson spanning the early 1940s, to the late 1990s. In addition to personal correspondence from his friends and family, it documents Atkinson’s knowledge of a variety of political and social issues through correspondence with editors and politicians. This correspondence touches upon a number of issues including, but not limited to: sexual orientation in the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code, the Toronto Bath Raids, gays in the military, the Meech Lake Accord, the British Monarchy and the CBC. Atkinson discusses his information request submitted to the National Archives of Canada in his correspondence with friend Peter Cock.

It includes material relating to his work in the merchant service, the restaurant and hospitality industry, the work he submitted to various publications, and records relating to his modelling and television appearances. The series is composed of correspondence, budgets, article submissions, minutes, promotional material, and includes the piece he submitted to The Reader’s Digest and The Body Politic on the Royal Canadian Navy Intelligence and RCMP investigations entitled “A Case History, with Observations", that resulted in his forced resignation from the Royal Canadian Navy in 1959.
