Biographical history
Reverend Hugh MacMillan was a missionary of The Presbyterian Church in Canada to Taiwan (Formosa). He was born on a farm near Lucknow, Ontario in 1893. After leaving high school, he taught at the public schools near his home. From there, once he had earned enough money, he attended the University of Toronto. Upon graduation he was offered a teaching position at the University, but instead decided to offer his services for overseas missions with The Presbyterian Church in Canada. In 1924, Hugh MacMillan was sent to Taiwan and served there until his retirement in 1962. While in Taiwan he taught high school, became Principal of the Theological College and of the Bible School, and was the Associate General Secretary of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. He was also the founder of the Leprosy Association, a Governor of the University, and the Mackay Memorial Hospital. On his return to Canada, he became associated with the Presbytery of West Toronto. Hugh MacMillan was elected as Moderator of the 90th General Assembly of The Presbyterian Church in Canada. He was married to Donalda MacIntosh and they had two children. Hugh MacMillan passed away on 29 April 1970.
