Biographical history

Hugh A. Halliday (1940- ) is an author and compiler of military aviation history in Canada. Born and educated in Manitoba, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1961, and was employed as a staff officer in the Air Historian Section and subsequently in the integrated Directorate of History, Department of National Defence. In 1968, he left the forces to teach at Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology in Welland, Ontario. He joined the staff of the Canadian War Museum in 1974 and served in several senior curatorial positions until his retirement in 1995. Halliday is the author or compiler of several studies related to the RCAF and Canadian airmen, including: Chronology of Canadian Military Aviation (1975); The Tumbling Sky (1978); 242 Squadron: The Canadian Years (1981); Woody: A Fighter Pilot's Album (1987); with Larry Milberry, The Royal Canadian Air Force at War, 1939-1945 (1990); and Typhoon and Tempest: The Canadian Story (1992). In 1993, he was recognized by the Canadian Aviation Historical Society, the National Aviation Museum, and the Directorate of History, DND, for "his distinguished contributions to the advancement of Canadian aviation history."

Biographical history

Juergen Rohwer (1924- ) served with the German Navy during the Second World War and is a German naval historian. He joined the German Navy in 1942, serving as an officer successively on a destroyer, a blockade-runner and a minesweeper. After the war he studied history and geography at the University of Hamburg, and he earned a Ph.D. in 1953. After completion of his University career in 1954 he was active in defence studies and in 1959 he was appointed Director of the Library of Contemporary History at Stuttgart University, becoming an Associate Lecturer there in 1971. He holds positions in several German organizations for the study of defence and weapons, and since 1958 he has been editor of the German Naval magazine "Marine Rundeschau". His many studies of naval history have been published in German. The penultimate of these books has been published in English in two volumes under the title "Chronology of the War at Sea 1939-1945. Dr. Rohwer has also contributed to International magazines and collected works on contemporary history, naval history, the Second World War, and librarianship.

Scope and content

Fonds consist of correspondence letters between Hugh A. Halliday and General Allard to Dr. Jurgen Rohwer of the Library of Contemporary History at Stuttgart University in Germany. Included in the letters of correspondence is information pertaining to Eastern Air Command and their attacks on German U Boats in Canadian waters. Given is a detailed list of possible attacks in specific locations and the U boats that could have been involved or if there were none in the area. There is also information on the use of acoustic torpedoes by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) during the Second World War and also information on whether any Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) aircraft were shot down by German U boats. Corrspondence includes the original German letters from Rohwer and their translated versions in English as well as the English letters from Halliday and General Allard to Rohwer.
