Biographical history
Hubert Hartfield Brown (1870-1951) was an active member of the Ornithological Subsection of the Biological Section of the Canadian Institute who conducted field observations in the Toronto area. His bird specimens and journals were among the early acquisitions of the Royal Ontario Museum. In addition to his ornithological observations, Brown collected numerous plant specimens from southern Ontario, depositing them with ROM.
Custodial history
Scope and content
Fonds consists of correspondence and two journals of bird observations. The two journals of bird observations have an index of birds in the front portion of the volumes. A page number beside a bird species on the list indicates where more detailed information may be found in the volumes. The detailed observations include weather conditions, the number of birds sighted and their behaviour, the location of the sighting, if the birds were only heard and not seen, the size and gender of birds that were shot and location of shooting, and the date of observation or collection. The smaller journal organizes the detailed observations by bird species, while the larger organizes by date in chronological order. The correspondence covers a period from 1888 to 1905. Some letters are of a personal nature, while others are from fellow bird enthusiasts and deal with bird observations and lists of collected species. The largest portion of the material is from ornithologist Alfred Kay. In addition to the letters, the file contains a list of bird species collected by H.H. Brown.
