After working for a time at the Imperial Bank of Canada, he became an editorial writer for the Toronto Daily Empire in 1890. Three years later, he retired from journalism to devote himself entirely to literary endeavours.

An ardent advocate of British imperialism, he also helped found the Empire Club.
