Henry Carr (1880-1963), was priest of the Congregation of St. Basil, Alumnus 1903, Superior of St. Michael's College (1915-1925), Superior of St. Basil's Seminary (1925-1928), Founding President of the Insitute of Mediaeval Studies (1929-1935), General Superior of the Basilian Fathers (1930-1942) Principal of St. Thomas More College (1942-1949), lecturer at the University of British Columbia from 1951 including the years at St. Mark's College, UBC, 1957-1962. Throughout, he taught philosophy, theology and religious studies and was in demand to give spiritual direction and public lectures.

The Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies (PIMS) was first instituted as the Institute of Mediaeval Studies in 1929, by the Basilian Fathers of St. Michael''s College, Toronto. In 1939. PIMS received its Pontifical charter. Distinguished international scholars have lectured, mentored and monitored graduate students in the history, philosophy, art , languages, paleography and culture of the middle ages. Its professors teach also at the Centre for Medieval Studies and the University of Toronto School of Graduate Studies. The Praeses or President is Chair of its advisory body, the PIMS Council, and is the chief administrator. A subsidiary of PIMS is its Publications unit. The fonds of individual padministrators, whether Superior or President, may be found under the names: Edmund Joseph McCorkell (1927-1931 and 1934-1940 and 1954-1961), Henry Bellisle (1931-1934), Henry Carr (1929-1935), Gerald Bernard Phelan (1935-1946), Anton Charles Pegis (1946-1954), Laurence Kennedy Shook (1961-1973), Edward Aloysius Synan (1973-1979 and 19 89-1990). Etienne Gilson was its first Director until Gerald B. Phelan took over as its President.
