    Administrative history

H.M.C. Dockyard Halifax was originally constructed by the Royal Navy and began its existence as a British fort in 1759. It served the British fleet during the Seven Years War, the American Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. In 1907 the Fortress of Halifax was officially passed from the British government to the Canadian government. During the Second World War and the Korean campaign, Halifax supported the Royal Canadian Navy and allied naval operations and was utilized as a naval and air base, a loading and assembly point for merchant convoys, an embarkation point for troops, and a fortress. Today, it serves as a home port for Canad's East Coast naval fleet and provides essential support and repair services for warships and naval auxiliary vessels.
