Precise custodial history information for most items in this collection is unknown. In the 1980s, the archivist of the Guelph Public Library began assembling rare book, local history, and Canadiana material found throughout the library and centralized their storage in a newly created archives. These formed the basis of this collection. The archives continues to accession material into this collection.
When these items were accessioned into the archives, they were assigned a P number as a reference code. This P number has been retained in the detailed item listings of this material.

This collection consists of published and unpublished books, booklets, pamphlets, essays, and other assorted material collected by the Guelph Public Library that document the history of Guelph.
