Biographical history
Greta Shutt was born in 1891 and died in 1977. The Daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Crowe and Edith Skinner, she graduated from the Guelph Collegiate Institute and subsequently took the two year Normal course at MacDonald Institute, qualifying her as a high school teacher. When in Manitoba with her husband, Donald B. Shtt, who become a nationally known bacteriologist working at the Ontario Agricultural College, she obtained a degree in Household Economics.
Gretta Shutt had a varied career and served as a teacher, editor, journalist, community worker, author and noted local historian. During World War 1, she taught Home Economics and Physical Training at Galt Collegiate. She was Women’s Editor of the Guelph Daily Mercury and Advertiser in 1920 and 1921, organized the Centennial Edition in 1927, and wrote as an editor in 1946. After failing to gain a seat on the Guelph Board of Education in 1938, she ran successfully in December 1939. She served from 1940-1962, holding the position of chairman five times.
In addition to her professional work, Greta Shutt was active in a variety of local clubs and organizations including the Canadian Club, the University Women's Club, MacDonald Institute Club Alummnae, the Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, YWCA, and Canadian Cancer Society. She was also one of the founders and a past president of the Guelph Historical Society and was an active local historian.
Greta Shutt was widowed in June 1973. After being in poor health for several months,she died in March 1977 at the age of 86.

The custodial history of these records, prior to their transfer to the Guelph Public Library archives, is unknown.
Scope and content
This fonds consists of scrapbooks, correspondence, newspaper clippings, historical publications, manuscripts, and other assorted material. These records were created, collected, or maintained by Greta Shutt to document various aspects of Guelph history including family history material for the Crowe, Shutt, Skinner, Watson, and Raymond families; compilations of earlier published histories of Guelph and related manuscript material; source material for Donald B. Shutt's autobiography; copies of early Guelph Historical Society publications; and copies of Greta and Donald Shutt's local history paper The Clarion.
