    Administrative history

The Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) was established in 1975 in Ottawa by professors and students at Carleton University. Beginning with performances at the University, the Company became a venue as well when it moved to what is now the Ottawa South Community Centre. In 1982 GCTC moved to its present 230-seat venue on Gladstone Avenue. The Company’s mandate is to foster, produce and promote quality theatre that examines Canadian life and Canadians’ place in the world. Its play development program supports emerging playwrights, and the Playwrights’ Unit gives them access to a dramaturge. The GCTC has showcased premieres of more than sixty plays and produced plays by George F. Walker, Judith Thompson, Ann Marie MacDonald, Arthur Milner and Michel Tremblay.
