Administrative history

Gethsemane United Church, located at 1461 Huron Street in London, was established May 12, 1963 with the amalgamation of Grove United Church and Emmanuel United Church. A campaign to build a new church began in 1963, and the opening service of Gethsemane United Church was held on April 12, 1964. The congregation closed on June 30, 2009.

Grove United Church, or The Grove United Church, was established in 1925, formerly Methodist. The Grove Methodist Church began in 1826 as a Methodist Mission on Huron Street. It was a part of London North Methodist Circuit and Siloam Methodist Circuit. The church moved in 1862 to the northeast corner of Huron St and Clarke Sideroad. The church joined the United Church in 1925 and changed its name to The Grove United Church. It formed part of a two part of charge with Siloam United Church. In 1935, the charge was renamed Siloam-Bryanston Pastoral Charge with the inclusion of Bryanston United Church. It closed in 1963 with its amalgamation with Emmanuel United Church to form Gethsemane United Church.

Emmanuel United Church was established on May 7th, 1961 to serve the Huron Heights community of London. The congregation originally met in Rowntree Memorial United Church at Cheapside and Elliott Streets, in London. A building was proposed for the corner of Huron Street and Sandford Street; however the congregation amalgamated with The Grove United Church in 1963 to form Gethsemane United Church.
