Biographical history
David Gershon (Dawid Gerszengauz, Kobryn, Poland, 1906 - Ottawa, 1972) and Tilly Herszman (Tauba Szejna Herszman, Sokoly, Poland, 1907 - Ottawa, 1993) emigrated in 1929 to Ottawa where they both had relatives. They met at the Greeners' Club and married May 26, 1931. David worked as a baker. Then he turned to the grocery store business with a butcher's counter. The first store was located at the corner of Kent and Gilmour, followed by one at 500 Kent Street (corner of Kent and Flora). They had three children, Maureen, 1932 (Newton Shinder). Sam, 1935 and Sydney, 1942. He was an avid reader and she enjoyed traditional crafts of sewing, knitting and embroidery. They celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a visit to Israel.
