        History

George Robertson Davidson was born on June 13, 1834, in Charlton, NY, the son of James Davidson and Janet Usher, originally from Scotland. He and his parents returned to Scotland and George emigrated to Canada and settled in Dundas in 1854. His parents eventually followed, with his father moving to Dundas in 1857, and his mother in 1858.

On November 17, 1857, he married Elizabeth Ann Howell (1836-1918) of Ancaster. They had three children: William Arthur Davidson (1865-1939); Peter Howell Davidson (1868-1950); and Clara Mary Margaret Davidson (1873-1892).

A carpenter by trade, George was also a local preacher, taught church school, and was a temperance worker. George taught at the Wesleyan-Methodist Church, which was originally located on Ogilvie Street but moved to its current location at the corner of Cross and Park on September 30, 1855. The Sunday School had been using the basement for their services, but a separate building was attached to the church in 1897.

He died on April 13, 1905, of pleuro-pneumonia.
